hi all,
been a while since i was last on here, just bought a 2001 disco 2 td5 for winter, been running a shogun for last couple of years thats been great, got this disco the other say and went upto the farm the other night to go shooting and got stuck in something of nothing, the traction control light came on and loads of silly noise like ABS kicking in noise and took all the power away and stalled. is this normal? was i supposed to floor it? with the shogun it just went anywhere this sat spinning front left wheel and back right. its got releatively new BFG A/T tyres all round. never had T/C before so unaware what its like or supposed to do. just seemed rubish off road and it was only shallow mud. started to think today to just sell it and buy another shogun lol but i do like the car so would like to try get through this little issue.
thanks all

from owner's handbook, driving techniques:
DRIVING ON SLIPPERY SURFACES
(ice, snow, mud, wet grass)
•Select the highest gear possible.
•Drive away using the MINIMUM throttle
possible.
•Drive slowly at all times, keeping braking to
a minimum and avoiding violent
movements of the steering wheel.

Just another thought, I watched a video earlier of a d2 stuck in snow; the guy didn't seem to be giving the tc chance to do its thing, kept backing off as soon as the wheels spun.

You may also find the tc isn't working, it usually disables itself if the fault lights on, as does abs. Or maybe your brakes could do with a good strip & clean?

OK, first of all there is a technique to using it. You don't floor it, you don't back off you just keep a steady amount of throttle and let the TC do the work.

Secondly, the TC system works through the ABS brakes - therefore if any part of your braking system is worn ie: abs sensors; callipers; discs or pads, then the TC will be less effective.

Do you have any warning lights that stay on?

I've always found the TC system to be remarkably efficient, but like anything it needs to be maintained.

no warning lights lit and unsure on brake conditions havnt had chance to get in on ramp yet. i did try steady throttle but it seemed to bog down until stalling with the TC kicking in. i foudn it better in low range but still fairly poor compared to past times in other 4x4's. my mate was with me and he said front leftand rear right was spinning and other not trying.

do the warning lights (abs/hdc/tc) come on for selftest when ignition is switched on and then go out,its not uncommon for them to be covered with tape inside the dash cluster to mask a problem

Something sounds wrong
The TC on my D2 works as well as expected I've burnt the bake pads out once before on a steep muddy hill but it never lost power
Off road I would say its almost as good as having locking diffs because it brakes the spinning wheel shifting the drive over to the wheel with grip
I would say it is very sensortif and comes in very early
If I've got the road tyres on it and drive it over a wet grass field or clay ground it seams to be working without it needing to but do trust it
