Can't really put my finger on it, and it's hard to describe...

It just feels like it's not running as smoothly sometimes, i wouldn't go as far as saying it's missing, just seems a little harsher and not as willing to rev.

Yet on other occasions I'm left astonished at how smoothly and briskly the td5 will rev and move along when pushed.

It's really puzzling me, as it's nothing major and obvious, but I am noticing it and it's starting to annoy me :confused::mad:

I'm thinking a sensor maybe starting to play up somewhere, and is giving bad readings.
And theres no oil in ECU plugs before you ask that :)

Check your air filter, fuel filter, intercooler hoses, and engine oil levels.
Got a remap? Is the turbo overboosting and switching the ECU to limp mode which you can reset by restarting the engine until the next overboost event?

Hi Shifty, how are you these days?

No remap.

A few thousand miles ago it had new air filter, fuel filter and new oil and filters. (all genuine ones)

The oil level is a little over the mark, but that's simply cos I over-filled by a little, it hasnt been going up or anything like that.

Im not sure what I'm looking for with the intercooler hoses, what do I need to check?

Thanks guys for the advice.

Shifty, can't spot anything abnormal with the intercooler pipes.

Next time I'm popping down to my local indie, I'll have a word with them about the MAF. Could they confirm it's that using a nanocom pooter thingy?

sometimes. Mine showed up as faulty on my diagnostic. Buckshot had the same problem and his showed as working ok on 3 occasions when I plugged it in. Landrover tried a new MAF and it cured it straight away. Have you got a mate you can borrow a maf off to test it?

OK, I've noticed something else that might help sort this,

i did quite a long drive the other day, starting out on country roads where it was running at its usual not great self

then there was a short section of dual carriageway where I got a bit carried away and kept my foot down.

after that, it was running great :confused:

I've tried it again a few times, after thrashing it, it runs better.

Is it possible something is not opening/closing properly and when I thrash it something is getting freed off, turbo somthing perhaps???

I'm not an expert, but think it might be related.....

If it was a turbo wastegate fault it wouldn't reset itself out of limp mode until the engine is turned off and then on again. I still rekon it's maf.

I have a 2002 Td5 CSW, 33000 miles, well maintained [edit: standard with EGR and cat intact...], which shows exactly the above symptoms and which has started getting really sluggish when stone cold. After reading through the various MAF threads I disconnected mine and went for a short drive onto the ring road - and the damn thing now goes like **** off a shovel, hot or cold, no smoke
I've had the car 3 years (bought it off a LR main dealer) and been meticulous with the servicing (independent) and although I know one quickly gets used to it I don't remember it ever feeling this perky!

So, while I'm waiting for the new MAF to arrive (mail order), is it ok to drive it [edit: with the MAF disconnected] for short distances for a couple of days (B roads) - I need to take the wife to work whilst her car is in for a service?

Thanks.

Yes it wont cause any problems with it disconnected. The ECU will just revert to a generic setting until you plug the new one in.
