Hi,
I have a problem with my td5 engine. When it's running on idle speed, coming a starnge knocking (not the normal td5 idle noise) noise, but when the rpm increasing over 1000-1200 the noise has gone. It seems to this noise coming from the timing chain hausing, but I'm not sure. I try to check this without the belt (maybe is's one of the caster) but not this is the reason. Has anybody else an idea what can I do before I take apart teh engine. This engine has 251 k, with new timing chain and parts, new head gasket, etc.
Thank you in advance.

Have the hydraulic cam followers been removed at any time?
Is the noise intermittent?
If the followers were removed and not kept upright, the oil can drain out, causing them to knock.
Or it could be one has simply failed, though age!
Mine makes the tapping noise, sometimes, but runs ok, I didnt keep my hydraulic cam followers upright!

It seems to have been solved the vehicle failure. When I rebuilt it (last year) I replaced the oil pump chain and the small timing "three rows" sprocket with some pattern parts. Last week a replaced back again with the genuine (but used) oil chain and sprocket, and the noise has gone. So when it should to change the timing chain and related parts highly recommended to use genuine parts in this case. Sorry for my english.
The noise was the same like this:
Thank you for your help and replies.

hard to tell of my lap top speakers but does the sound like its coming from the bottom end ..if so welcome to the club harmonic balance ..mine has ran for 2 years with one so what

Nice one Janos!
When I did my rebuild I got my parts from Turners, they all came in JLR boxes for quite a reasonable price.
There are an awful lot of junk "OEM" parts on the market!
