Td5 slick shift worth the hassle???

i heard it reduces travel on disco too and tightens stuff up, but will take your word over others on that

defender one comes with a longer lower stick and a spacer to lift pivot point
disco kit is basically a different bias plate, with two bolts securing the adjuster pillar to the plate and you adjust that to alter bias to 3rd 4th

standard bias plate has slotted holes and the pillar as part of the plate, so you move the whole plate to adjust

hmm, quite a few give good reviews and notice a difference, but based on what you say I can't see how. I know there is always the old "confirmation bias" which always comes with spending money! hope that's not all the reason for good comments

I am told i have to take the centre console out in disco to fit this, I think it's one for my mechanic

Removing the centre console is easy, I think from memory that there are only 4 screws.

The kit arrived, starting to wonder if it's a bit of a swizz in light of your comments. Here is a pic of the kit:


There looks to be more than just a bias plate there, so maybe it will make more difference than just a replacement OEM bias plate would make. Based on the picture do you agree or do you think this is £100 down the pan?! Will it make ANY difference to feel of the gear change over and above what a new bias plate would make?

Why not fit the kit and see if it improves the gear shift.
lf it doesn't, take it off and send it back.

Because I am short of time, it's £100 and I am even shorter of money, and to do a proper test I would need to fit both a new bias plate/springs, test, fit the slick shift kit, test, ....

Instead I asked them by email. Their response confirmed it does definitely reduce travel even in Disco. I read all the reviews on their site and many D2 owners confirmed the same, one even measured it and said travel in neutral (left to right movement)) reduced by 50mm. So I am happy and gonna fit it. thanks

I think most people get a slickshift as their current setup is all worn and sloppy anyway so it is difficult to gauge as it will obviously feel better
With a Defender the throw is shorter which is nice, for a Disco not sure

So John did it make a difference or did you send it back?

Just finished fitting it. Next is gearbox oil then engine oil top up then out for a run, will update after that, if I get home

Well just had a 10 mile round trip to test it out. Very nice. It feels like the overall size of the gate (travel/throw between gears) has been reduced by 40-50%. Amazing really. Still not too happy with my gearbox so I have other issues but I am sure anyone fitting slick shift will be happy if they want a shorter stick travel and overall snappier shift.

What I've found out by experience is that with the kit, if the ball cage breaks up on the selection yoke, the ball falls into the box and you are stranded. Without the kit, the ball stays put and you just get a very stiff change, at most you lose 1st gear
