I fitted a new pump yesterday and fuel filter took abit of time to get it running but got it running in the end when it did fire up it was runing on about 3 cylinders. My mate took it a blip down the road and it was firing on all 5 again as normal and it was fine this morning but then this afternoon when it had been stood for abit i fired it up it started as normal but appeared to be running on 3 again this has happened twice today but then as i drive it it goes back to normal normal power and running nice. Any ideas guys??????

The pump is quiet now really and as i say it fires up but is as flat as a fart like it running on 3 cylinders but then as i drive down street it goes back to normal firing on all 5 and loads of power everytime i go out to it now its like it.

wiring loom to injectors get oil in them and it buggers up the contacts.. remove the injector connector and se if its wet if it is you can do a temp repair by cleaning out with brake cleaner but it will happen again, land rover do a modified loom for em..very common fault on td5 so i am led to believe

Its a 1999 model don't think you purge this like that all it says in handbook is ignition on for 30 secs then off for 15secs repeat 5 times then depress throttle to floor and turn engine if it fails to start do it all again. Thing is its running but its running like its only on 3 cylinders to start with then gets better if i drive down street it soon goes to 5 cylinders and drives like theres nothing wrong.

well try it, mines a 1999 and this works for me

look at the ecu as well.. see if there is oil in the multiplug connector, it could be coincidence that its started now..but my bet is the wiring loom for the ecu and injectors..oil contamination ..

first place to look is ecu end of plug..if its in there then its deff on injector plugs..litle o ring fails and lets oil seep to ecu along wiring..clean it out and try it..

My understanding of this problem is there is is always loose oil within the rocker area, which can and does sometimes get past the seal of the injector loom plug which connects to the next loom heading towards the ECU.

When this happens oil seeps past the seal and enters the second loom and migrates down to the ECU socket and can even enter the ECU itself.

When the socket in contaminated with oil it affects the operation of the ECU and then missfires and various other running problems ensue.

This is often cured by installing a new injector harnes within the rocker space as this will include new olives there a better seal, however I can't help but wonder if a clean of the area concerned and an application of Hylomar wouldn't achieve the same result.

The ECU socket and the harness plug will need thorough cleaning with brake or switch cleaner.

Good luck
