hi , my 99 td5 keeps overheating, symptoms are
engine gets up to temp but blows cold air out of heater
after about 20 mins engine temp gets hot and goes into limp mode then within a Min temp starts to cool down, engine then runs perfect and heater blows hot air.I have already change thermostat, water pump hoses etc. at a lost what could be causing this, also its losing a bit of water . cue

water pump, air lock, head gasket.

My money is on head gasket failure.

How much coolant is it losing? Have you had it sniff tested?

Are u sure there's no air left in the system? U nknow u have to lift the tank above the bleed hole when u fill with coolant untill a clean flow comes out...then put the tank back, put back partially the bleed screw, start the engine, wait untill no bubbles are showing there then tighten it well, make sure that the tank's cap is fully tightened.

To test unscrew easyly the bleed screw while engune running... the coolant must come out airless with pressure instantly... if not then u have air in the system ....or the pump failed... when u will be sure that no air left in the system and the symptom persists go for a sniff test as ratty suggested... if it's positive then off the head.

Find where the water is going and you've found the problem. Cool air out of the heater is an indicator of not enough water.

Hi still ongoing problem with my td5, new radiator, sniff tested three times with the latest dye,had 2 new thermostats, water pump, hoses and still its is pressurising any idea what it could be. many thanks cue

If its got pressure when you loosen the cap when it's cold then I would suggest a head problem of some sort . If you open the cap to ensure their is no pressure when she is cold, then go for a run and get her up to temp and let her cool properly say overnight, if you have additional pressure left then this could not have been created by the cooling system, i.e. It had to be added by the exhaust gasses leaking into the cooling system and your coolant will be escaping into the cylinder (s). I had the same thing on mine in the last coupe of weeks I flushed the rad through, fitted new thermostat & water pump bleed the system more than once and still had the same problem :-( thought I would be ok towing the caravan for our holiday and mine needs a new head now :-( p.s. from what I have been told the sniff tests don't always work that well.

Just my humble opinion (& a bit of science) hope it helps :)
