Hi, I was about due for a new fuel filter housing so I got my mechanic to do it when in for MOT today. The old ones had bolts and top end of housing totally rotted.
I've had to purge system twice since I got it back - first time I assumed garage hadn't done it properly so I did it and went for a 20 mile drive no issues.
I went out to move landy a few metres there and it conked out again after a few metres - repeated purge and it started fine after cranking for 10 secs.
Is this usual after a new housing and filter replacement, or could I be losing pressure somewhere?

If you drove 20 miles with no problem then no more purging should have been necessary.
If you turn on the ignition (but don’t start the engine) the fuel pump should whine for about 30 seconds and then stop.
Check this.
If it needs purging again there is most likely an air leak somewhere.

update: just listened in engine bay for noise when priming - a very audible hissing sound coming from fuel pressure regulator - bingo. Is it worth just trying to replace gasket first or whole unit?
I'm thinking that I was possibly losing pressure for a while at filter housing and when the housing got replaced/primed, it made the next weakest point leak.

I was typing reply at same time you were ^^ thanks!

okay, update time.
I got my mechanic to fit a new fuel pressure regulator. The old one was hissing like I've never heard before.
All was going fine until today when it started and conked out - got it started again after purging process and cranking it for 30 secs.
I'll detail below the timeline of events since last week and see if people agree with next step.

Sometime last week:
Went to start engine and it starts, goes 2 metres then cuts out.
Look under wheel at fuel filter and it is leaking.
Change filter, purge system and it starts again.
Car was in for MOT a few days later so I took the chance to get them to replace fuel filter housing as the screws/top end were rotten.
Get car back, drive 20 miles all fine.
Start it again, conks out after a few metres, purge and works fine.
Notice a very loud hissing from fuel pressure regulator so get new one fitted.
Checked for oil in injector harness - none.
Picked it up yesterday and it felt slightly laboured at first, flat spots around 1800 Revs, but that cleared after about 10 minutes.
Fuel pump DOES make slight gurgling sounds from time to time - last one fitted about 15k/2 years ago.
Drove like a dream this morning to work.
Went to start after work and it conked out after 2 metres again.
Purged and it started again after 30 secs turning.

So my question would be is it worthwhile to get it plugged in to diagnostics before I do anything else - I have a place within walking distance of the house that does it. Thanks all.

As someone going through very similar problems at the moment, If I lived as close to a diagnostics centre I'd be straight in there. What is it? £50? good luck

Have you tried putting the old fuel filter back on the new filter housing to see if it still happens, and check the rubber gasket has a good seal.

I've thrown out the old filter, but I'm going to try another new filter in any case and check the seal.

Did any muck enter the lines when the new filter was installed?

Not to my knowledge, but it was awfully dirty round that area, so I suppose it is possible. Would you recommend flushing the whole system?

It's best to always jetwash round the filter be for replacing I would go with what you say try new filter and seal and see what the outcome is be for moving on

This is your problem.

The fuel pressure regulator IS the problem?
Or replacing it IS the problem?

Ta.

So air is entering the fuel system as of the filter head change...

Do you know if the garage transferred the old unions over to the new filter head with the relevant one way valves and air bleed parts etc. all the correct location? Or did they fit all new ones and possibly NOT fit these parts?

Very odd this gets done then you have an issue.

Todays update.
Had to purge it last night to start engine.
Left it overnight and it started first time.
Drove it down the road and extremely flat/lagging at 1500-1800 RPM - exact same symptoms I had when last pump blew.
Took it to diagnostics and it's been plugged in but no codes relevant to my issues were given out.
Spoke at length to guy at centre and he agrees it's pointing to pump, but he's also going to run a pressure test on the fuel system.
If it's the pump, it will be the 3rd one in 80,000 miles - last one was only 18 months ago, granted I've not done many miles in it over the past year but that seems very prone to failing (genuine LR parts both times).
Seeing as I have the hatch cut out of tub if it's the pump then I'll just buy one of the cheaper models you can get.

I didn't think you would get codes, fuel issues on these TD5's rarely throw fault codes.

Wait wait wait - before spending more money are the garage SURE the new filter head was fitted with all parts and done correctly?

I bought a new filter head about 2 years ago when i first noticed the housing decaying a bit. Never got round to fitting it. It came with 4 new brass unions. That is how I presented it to the garage who are happy for me to supply parts. I get what you are saying - there is a part on one of the valves that should have been transferred over/replaced from the old housing, namely the air bleed part. I'd better ask them! Thanks

Does sound like pump to me.....a pressure check will soon decide it.

My new filter head on my D2 TD5 came with the brass unions including the air bleed and non return valves prefitted.

Cheers
