Dear All,

The continuing saga of my pressurising cooling system, with thanks to the previous replies from the 'wise men'. Been running with the 'fat top hose' condition for the last six months. Finally decided to get the head gasket done by my local specialist. Strangely the advice was "well it might be the head gasket but this is a very expensive job so, to be sure, flush muck (lots of this) from the system first" . As I said in my last post there are no other symptoms other than a rigid top hose. I tried to loosen the drain plug and now have a leak in the bottom metal pipe which can't be fixed and is £220 for a new one (landrover only supplier). Does anyone have any advice; this is a lot of money for for a bit of steel tube.

After months of watching the top-hose getting ever 'fatter'; changing the thermostat; flushing and (in this thread) replacing the, quite complicated, metal pipework ( Devon Landrover £100 2nd hand), I was again preparing to visit yet another garage-man for, probably, a new head gasket. And so back to where I began this just before Christmas last year!
One other thing. After the flush and replaced metal pipework the 'fat-hose' was gone... hurrah! But no, I found a short hose feeding the oil cooler had split and this was only noticeable by the top of the exhaust cat unit being wet. I recalled the someone had asked about coolant loss with no obvious leak and wondered if this might explain it: rapid evaporation from a hot exhaust.
This short (2 1/2 inch) hose OEM £18! Craddocks of Cannock suppllied one for £1.80. Several hours later with some blood loss the new hose was on and without having to strip the oilcooler off the block. So leak fixed and fat-hose condition reinstated.
I had to visit the Midlands next before seeing my garage-man so called in to Craddocks and, for little money, bought a new header tank cap as I could never believe that the system was below 20psi when blown up.
This is the time when you are reminded of "keeping your head". The new cap has cured the problem. After all this I still do not understand how the TD5 cooling system can generate such internal pressure (which persists after cooling down) except, as most have opined, by a gas leak from somewhere.

I hope this story may be useful to other owners and that it is now (at least for this fault) concluded.

it is nice to see a easy/cheap fix!! sometimes!!!:)
 
Doesn't sound quite right to me !!.

The cap on the coolant reservoir releases pressure above 1.4bar. The TD5,s cooling system runs well below this pressure. If your cap is relieving pressure, then I'd say thst tge coolant system is running at to high a pressure.

I would place a clear plastic bottle over the coolant tank spill pipe and see if any coolant is ejected. ( excess pressure will take coolant returning through the cap out with it ).
 
sorry to jump in on this thread, This metal pipe is it the one that joins up to the water pump hose? if so how far should it go up to wards the pump? as I have just had an leak from a rubber hose just behind the bumper and goes to the pump had to make a one as nobody had seen that join there before confused: so looks like someone as cut it back before in a past life.

no! there is a rubber pipe that fits onto the water pump, the pipe in this fred is the one that bolts onto the chassis and is 2 pipes welded together, thermostat is at 1 end nearest steering box, these pipes have a habit of corroding,
 
Just changed the coolant and the water pump on mine and replaced the hose from the coolant tank!
The bastard steel pipe has split at the bracket so now onto look for one of those! But not really wanting to pay Landrover £220, anybody breaking a TD5
