I have a 03reg Discovery Td5. I am having problems with the power. The engine will rev up to 4000 with no problems. But when I go up hills it will only do 20 mph. It will reach 70 mph on a long straight but will take a long time. It will down shift ok and the engine will rev up but the acceleration will not be there.
I have checked the air inlet and all pipes associated with the air system all ok. the turbo spins with the engine so i assume its ok. Have not checked the fuel filter yet as i am gettting a new one tomorrow. However the filters were changed 6 months ago. Have filled up with a full tank of diesel from tesco's 4 days ago. could it be dodgy diesel. bearing in mind the engins runs fine on tick over and revs ok stationary. The engine has only done 48K miles. Have contacted land rover who want to test drive it. Has anyone any suggestions before I pay land rover hundreads to test the car.

have you checked any of the engine bay wiring loom it sometimes can rub and cause a air flow meter fault ,check around the aircon pump area and also check the red connector on the engine ECU in the battery box, if there is any oil in there then it could be the injector loom causing a fault.

Hello Scotty15 Thanks for the advice I will check this tomorrow. I have noticed some rubbing of the loom around the aircon pump hoses but have not checked them. If it was the injection system would the engine rev normally? It seems the engine runs ok but the acceleration of the car is missing. I mentioned that the turbo was spinning, could it be that the waist gate is stuck open and therefore the amount of air into the engine under load is low. Is there a way of testing this with out removing the exhuast. thanks

Up early today to have a look at the turbo as some other forums have suggested. I found the waist gate arm loose and the locking nut wound fully back on the thread. (some one has obviously adjusted this). I have put the arm on fully and have road tested the car. It pulls wonderfully better than it has since i bought it from a land rover dealer. Now i know the problem is the waist gate setting i will have to find out how to set this up. I will be down the motor shop to get a boost gauge for this. Thank you for all your help. This site is excellent, it saved my money going to the dealership.

Brilliant news Steve, well done. These problems are often such silly little things wrong, but the effect can be huge.

Btw 911?? Not a Porky fan are we?

Got my boost gauge today. Does anyone know how to fit this to the dicovery td5 engine. The vacume hose is computer run. Can i still install it to the pipe coming from the inlet hose.

cheers steve

Finally fitted the boost gauge properly today. Took the car for a test drive up a big hill in 2nd. The boost gauge got to 17 Psi max. On normal driving it runs below 15 Psi. Very happy all is well. Still need to mount the gauge when I fined a nice pod. Took a photo but can't seem to attach it to this forum.
