Td5 knocking sound from underneath

Hi guys I've got a knocking clattering sound coming from underneath well at least that's where it sounds like it's coming from

It happens with no load just before idle and most noticeable when cruising to a stop.. And as it makes that noise the Landy shakes a tad... Not like an injector gone (had the on my other td5) at stand still in netural with engine running if I blip the throttle as It returns back to idle it makes a faint noise but if I put it in gear and lift the clutch just as it bites to give a bit of load then put the clutch back in its much more apparent

My mechanic had a quick look but didn't take off anything but said let the noise get worse before looking further but doesn't think its internal.. He doesn't think it's crank pulley but he didn't take the belt off to look

Me being me I want to get it sorted

She's starts first flick every time and apart from that noise I'm so happy with her!

Any ideas guys or has anyone had something similar with there td5?

Find yourself a new mechanic. No mechanic would tell anyone to let it get worse other than one that wants more money to fix a bigger job later or simply has no idea what they are talking about?

A simple cheap fix now could turn into an expensive and catastrophic breakdown later if not sorted.
It may be the dual mass flywheel failing but could be many things. Hard to diagnose without seeing the motor or taking stuff off to have a good look.

I'm assuming you have checked for wear in the prop UJs? You do not want to leave these to get worse because if they let go at speed you'll have big problems.

Thanks shifty very much... We did the crank pulley last night and guess what it's exactly the same, like you said I should find another mechanic it's doing my head in although touch wood it's starting first kick hot and cold and is pulling my trailer every day without bother... There's a place called devon 4x4 about 10 miles away so may take it there next week... I'm located near Barnstaple does anyone no of any good garages around here who no the td5 well?

That's true. My front prop rear joint went a couple of years back - easy replacement. Started with a squeak which turned into a clank just on and off load.

Yeah you really don't want a prop to let go, I've had it happen on me (with a regularly greased one!) and it makes a right noise and big mess underneath.

A client of mine, ex Naval engineer, said his front prop joint let go and shoved the prop up through the floor! It just missed his leg.

The comedy ejection of metals parts witnessed in my rear view mirror was the only non trouser browning part.

Stop, throw the bits in the back, stick it in diff lock and carry on. What are you moaning about?

damn straight I pulled the remnants of the prop off the spline and drove home with the spline clunking off the bodywork lol

Thanks guys, it's something in the engine I think or injectors or chain tensioner... But after doing the crank pulley and it not being that I can see I'll be spending a fair amount of before resolution

it sounds like a problem I too have. I've tried running with no aux belt on (only short run as it operates the water pump), today I took off the rear prop and it still happens. I've found play in my handbrake drum so that's on the must do list, I've had quite a leak for a while so I must do it.

I knocked the engine off on a quiet road to see if the noise was still there. With the landy in gear and clutch down I could hear something but not sure of it was my problem. Out of gear clutch in or out and it was fine.
I also found it very very clunky without the rear prop in
