TD5 inlet manifold

Are they all the same through the years in both Defender and Discovery application?

I want to buy a 2nd hand one, so I can clean it out and tap in for a proper boost gauge reading. I'd rather do it on a 2nd hand one than on my own off the vehicle.

Looking at the pictures, some of them look to have a slightly different angle where the EGR valve fits?

Manifolds are all the same. I brazed a nipple into the small core plug at the end of the manifold for my boost gauge. Works a treat and no risk of damaging the soft manifold. Also easy to put back to stock if needs be. Should point out that I knocked out the core plug first before brazing then refitted it with a smear of blue Hylomar. Saves the manifold melting.

May well get that manifold actually, will check the budget after the weekly shop's been done!

Then just have to spend time with parafin and a washing up brush cleaning all the carbon out of it!

Its a lovely job - NOT !!!!!!!
Dont be tempted to use oven cleaner or caustic as it eats the ally.
Another trick is to wait until your old lady is going out for a good two hours or so, wack the oven up to full, put the manifold on the middle shelf and let it cook for an hour. Leave the kitchen window open. When you take it out a lot of the oil and ****e will have carbonised and it will come out a lot easier with a wire brush taped to a small piece of broom handle.

What sort of evidence would it leave, out of interest?

I cannot be caught having done that, I will be made to clean the damn thing thoroughly!

It works on the same principle as the self cleaning oven. It wont leave any mess in the oven but it can smell a bit and a little smoke may be produced for the first five minutes or so which is why you need the window open. Hence making sure she's at the bingo or some such nonsense.

We had just fitted our new kitchen so the old oven was pressed into service in the back garden before it went to the tip.

Take off the EGR - you are going to bin it anyway.

I like the idea of taking out the rear core plug.

Would taking both of those out not give good access to scrub it clean?

The branches to the cylinders should be easy to do.

If you're going to knock the core plug through then tap it INTO the manifold as it will not damage the soft aluminium. If you try to tap it out from inside it will dig in. When I refitted the core plug I just gave it a smear of Hylomar Blue and gently tapped it back using a suitable sized socket as a drift. This method saves having to drill the soft manifold and ensures it is completely reversible if needs be.

When I initially did mine the manifold was still on the engine so I slid a long piece of heavy card into the manifold from the EGR end to prevent the core plug or any other crap dropping down any of the inlet tracts. Then with a strong magnet from and old PC hard drive attached to a length of wooden dowelling I fished the core plug out. Would have been easier to do it with the manifold off but I'm a lazy b*gger at the best of times.
