Hi,

This afternoon, after having used the car in the morning, the car started a very sinister engine noise. It is like a whistle starting around 1800 RPM and finishing at around 3000. Much more noisy in 1st, 2nd and 3rd, less in 4th and not sure in 5th. The more I push on the accellerator the louder it is. Can't hear it at all if the gear is not engaged.

Car runs otherwise well as normal.

Car has 72000 miles. Had since 60000 and just had a service (oils and filters).
Had a "standard" chip done at 63000 miles. No problem since.

Any clue???

Many thanks

Nic

Hi,

It is getting worse. With the bonnet open it sounds to me like the noise is coming from the turbo. No holes in the pipes. I took the air pipe coming from the filter and checked the turbo fan. It has a 1-2 mm movement sideways. Is it the wheel bearing gone???

the turbo does have a little side to side movement as it runs on an oil film which aint there without the engine running, is there any in/out movement on the turbo,
still think its the exhaust manifold, its quite common on remapped cars, though ive vever had it

I had this noise on my first Td5. A manifold stud snapped allowing the exhaust gas leak. Started off sounding like a belt squealing.
Mine also had a Diesel tuning box (160bhp). I wonder if the extra power is a cause or just coincidence as I've not had the same problem on my later unchipped Td5's. I have removed the EGR on all of them.
