Hi I need to order a new td5 head for a 2004 disco 2
I'm also going to order a fitting kit but I'm not sure if I need a 1 2 or 3 hole gasket type?

Can anyone help?

If a 1 hole came off and you've skimmed the head you would put a 2 hole one on but if your putting a new head on I couldn't saw you could put a 3 hole one on if stuck but it my lower the compression as they are thicker 1 hole being the thinnest and so on ask who you get the head off they may be able to tell you better

I'm buying a brand new one from turner engineering, I rang them and they told me the woman who can help isn't back until 6th Jan

not quite so
unfortunately here's a specific LR thing again;) > the 2 hole one is the thinner, then comes the 1 hole and the 3 hole:
- 2 holes = 1.20mm
- 1 hole = 1.27mm
- 3 holes = 1.35mm

for a new head the 2 hole one is needed!

click on +15 in this link then + in front of each thickness http://www.allbrit.de/UNI.cfm?PAGE=816369&SPRACHE=EN

if somebody told you that the 1 hole is the thinner you've been missinformed as this thickness order by holes on the gasket(2-1-3) is so from the beginning;)

I just bought a new head from Turner Engineering and would recommend them. You need to look at the gasket you have just taken off and replace it with one with the same number of holes. Mine was a 1 hole gasket and I replaced with like for like.

no offence but that might be wrong wrong...not critical though as you used a thicker gasket than needed which can affect the compression not doing any damage, it's all about thicknes and protrusion of the pistons(more complicated than it seems)...cos if your gasket was with 1 hole, the old head was or skimmed or somebody fitted the wrong gasket to it(as long as you are not aware that the pistons, connecting rods or the crankshaft were replaced... always use 2 hole gasket for a new head, u should use the same thickness gasket for the same head if it wasnt skimmed or the pistons or crankshaft replaced

2. Note the gasket thickness indicator and ensure
the same thickness gasket is used on refitment
of cylinder head. (the same head, a.n)
CAUTION: If new pistons, connecting rods
or crankshaft are to be fitted, it will be
necessary to measure piston stand proud in
order to determine thickness of gasket
required – See Pistons, Connecting rods
and Cylinder Bores – Cylinder head gasket
selection.

....
13. There are three thicknesses of cylinder
head gasket available and in order that the
correct gasket is fitted, it is necessary to
determine the stand proud (protrusion) of
each piston above the top face of the
cylinder block. Gaskets have either 1, 2 or 3
identification holes and the following
procedures must be followed in order that
the correct gasket is selected.

even if the head has been skimmed, you use the same as thickness as came off, only if pistons been played with do you change

Thanks for all the info from everyone

Ive gone with sierraferys information and ordered a 2 hole one.

Shopping list as follows

Late New TD5 Cylinder head £1095 + VAT

Cylinder fitting kit £150 + VAT

Total including Vat and delivery £1518

Once again thanks for all your help

if you do this job buy 13 grommets too(ERR7266), they are cheap but important cos they help the bolts grip the cover down well onto the seal and head... you'll avoid ulterior leaking
