TD5 gearbox problem??

Hi. So basically my gears were grinding on my TD5 and were progressively getting worse to the point where if I took my foot off the clutch while moving and didn't hit the accelerator there would be a horrible metal clanging and smashing sound. Within minutes I was stationary and unable to put the Land Rover into gear. Any ideas??

Not the best place to post , Depending on what vehicle , then that section section would have been better.

several but does it drive in diff lock

So,

Are you saying you cannot get the vehicle into gear from neutral anymore?
Is the clutch pedal working correctly, as far as you can tell? does it feel the same as it did?
You say it is making a crunching noise, is this only when you try to get into gear?

Appears to be a D2, does it have diff lock ?

just checked and it does drive in diff lock

good point ,though the early ones have the spigot

put it out of diff lock and in to drive and see which prop spins

Hi yes Cant get any gears. There is no resistance I can move the gear stick but just does nothing (feels like the gearbox isn't in the car anymore) clutch doesn't seem to feel any different (although since purchasing the vehicle 1 month ago it has had a lot of resistance on the pedal) the crunching was when trying to get into gear until it totally gave up last night.

I am confused, you say you have just checked and it drives in diff lock, but then your next post you say you cannot get any gears.

If you cannot get any gears how did you drive it in diff lock?

It is only driving in diff lock. When not in diff lock the car does nothing. You can do what you like with the gears but it's as if the engine isn't even running. However in diff lock all gears work including reverse.

yes. But when diff lock is not engaged the gear stick moves but doesn't put the vehicle into gear and I don't require clutch to move the gear stick However when diff lock is applied you wouldn't think there is anything wrong
