Hi all, I have a 2004 discovery TD5 what fuel other than diesel can i safely put in the tank, veggie oil is currentley £5 for 5 litres at my local morrisons also a friend runs a garage and old engine oil is freely available. Last winter i put filtered engine oil in my last TD5 (only a small amount about 5 gallons mixed with 10 gallons of diesel) but then sold it so i don't know if it did any permenent harm any advice welcome.

my rationale for using veggie is to help reducing consumption of fossile ressources and lower pollution ... so "recycling" engine oil is ruled out

but when you see how an engine can overrun and self destroy on it's own oil, for sure it could be used as fuel

Have a read of this http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f7/cooking-oil-td5-80487.html and do a search, there's lods of threads about it. opinions vary about td5's and veg oil use so I'm just gonna say it's up to you and personally I would never put used engine oil in my tank not only because it's illegal but I just don't like the thought of that much crap going through my engine and I run on wvo ;)

Got lots of metal particles in UMO,not good on precision injectors-plus its illegal and if caught, might get ur td5 crushed

all commonrail engines, not just Td5 are not compatible with oil...they might run for a while but u'll end up with a screwed motor

A few months ago, I disposed of about 20 litres of new/unused but surplus engine oil I had by tipping it in the tank of my TD5.

I only ever put a maximum of about 5 litres at a time with say 3/4 tank of derv till it was all used up. There was no noticeable difference in running, but some weeks later, I noticed that the "old lady" was producing a fair bit of smoke, most noticeable at idle. I suspected turbo seals and sent it to landy garage to whom I "confessed" what I had done!!

He replaced fuel filter and did an intensive fuel treatment and everything is back to normal again.

I guess that the smoke may have been nothing to do the engine oil addition but it is something I won't be doing again

I've been filtering my used oils (engine, gearbox, axles) and adding them to the fuel tank for quite a while now. I've not suffered any problems yet.

My take is that the injectors are to prescision to put anything other than derv in the tank just an aside the td5 is not common rail as fuel is delivered to the injectors at relatively low pressure the cam shaft operates the pressurising and the valve is opened electronically bit of a mixture early cummins later common rail all mixed up.

If u put it like this i must agree. ... but i must reconfirm that oil is not good for it
