Hi all,
Looking to do bit of a overhaul of the front axle, it started off just wanting to do the brakes but after taking off the wheel for a scouting mission i noticed the drive members are pretty worn. since I'm this far in i might as well replace that leaking swivel seal as well (you know, 'while I'm there'!!)

so I've got a couple of questions, I would quite like grooved discs because they look cool! any recommendations here? I've got vented discs by the way.
as for brake callipers, it seems a set can be had very cheaply at just under £50 for one, are these good quality or should i go for something more expensive?

lastly, I will need the change the half shafts, so far I've only found brit part CVs or Ashcroft. as much as i like to buy quality i can't really justify paying for uprated CVs when i have standard wheels and tyres or never do extreme off roading. is there a happy middle? or are Britpart CVs ok?

many thanks,
Callum :)

BP shafts are decent.

Ideally buy genuine calipers Paddocks have them for roughly £160 a pair

Im going for the EBC Slotted discs at £165 a pair. I dont like drilled discs.

I've just looked on Brookwells and they have callipers made by 'AP' I would assume this is AP Lockheed, they are £97 each. I'm going to contact them to make sure, unless anyone knows on here?

many thanks,
Callum

A job well worth doing. I've got a couple of threads of pictures of me doing something similar

and

I got discs and pads from EBC directly, and used the original calipers but with new seals and stainless pistons. They're still nice and shiny five years later. My CV joints were OK, no signs of slop or other wear so I re-used them. Post plenty of pictures so we can see how it goes for you.

thank you, i'll take lots of photos and do a post.
being a TD5 I'm not sure if I've got the single nut hubs or the older two nuts and a locking tab washer between them?
it's quite good fun (until i look at my bank account!) making sure I've got everything i need, as it's my daily I've got to be fairly efficient.

all the best,
Callum

As a TD5 it would probably have left the factory with a single nut and spacers on each side. Though some people fit the lock nut style ones later in the vehicle's life. I found with mine doing one corner at a time it didn't need to be out of action for more than a day or two at once.

Id say don't spend out on expensive or original calipers!

I put britpart rear calipers on mine for a similar cost as you suggest in your first post, along with britpart discs and pads all round.

That was 4 years ago, and under constant use (its my everydayer) , that also includeds towing a fully loaded trailer up to capacity at least three times a week! I do drive gently and use gear braking too, I also greenlane regularly!

I pressure wash the underside off every week, that's important for brake components to last well.

Not to much signs of wear, will last another 4 years in my opinion with a pad change soonish! Buying the most expensive isn't always necessary. :)

well damn!
I brought AP Lockheed callipers from brook wells along with EBC spot drilled and grooved discs, all seals are OEM.

I know what you mean, callipers are so simple can't go too far wrong. I just thought sod it, i'll wait for the bank account to recover before looking i reckon!

sounds good, the spacer in-between the bearings, should that give the correct preload or can you buy different sizes?

obviously the spacer is selectable in that there are different sizes to give correct preload of bearings,if you buy timken bearings your old spacer tends to be correct for the new bearings, though you still need to check

Yup, the standard spacer is pretty good and I've never needed a different sized one, although they are available. Some of my bearings have been NTN brand too, and they're a good fit with the standard spacers. With the lock nut arrangement the advantage was that you could gradually tighten them up as they wore, but the single nut ad spaces ones don't seem to go slack very quickly, and if they do it's time for new bearings. Even the famous name brand ones aren't that dear, so it's just another service item like brake pads.

*** sorry Callum, my laptop has had a Brain fart and suggested this was your last post!, so a bit out of sync, anyway maybe the spreadsheet will help others!*****

EBC Slotted and Drilled vented discs all day long.
I fitted them with new callipers and braided hoses.

get yourself a trade account (expect to pay up to 50% less for parts)
See pics as example my discs were £89 for a pair and have an RRP of silly oney!
heres EBD / etc part nos from my spreadsheet (ignore the highlight, my ones are USR415 Fnt and USR416 rears)
Callipers were Lockheed part nos in spreadsheet
£38 rears per side, £55 fronts per side ( trade price though)
expect to pay around £55 rear and £80 fronts per side plus vat.

PS buy cheap.....pay twice or with brakes pay with your life!
IMO don't scrimp on tyres, brakes or oil..........
