Why not spend some of your budget learning how to fix the one you've got.

Santa would appear to be bringing me a MIG welder as my Discovery is getting on a bit but I wouldn't dream of moving it on and buying someone else's problem that they couldn't be bothered sorting.

It's not to replace the 200, it's to replace the 300 which has a rotten chassis, and has a several page mot failure sheet, the 200 has a nice 10month MOT left and sound chassis

It's for my old man, we are gonna break the 300 - as I want the gearbox and it's too much work for him to contemplate doing
 
I'll sell you a TD5 Discovery (1999) for £2,500 + the dead rotton 300tdi if you can find an extra £500 kicking around :)
 
You won't find many TD5's for £2000 and if you do, they certainly won't be in great condition. £2000 will get you a good 300 tdi but with the winter on its way, it's a sellers market and it will be harder to find a good one at the right price. I paid £1200 for my 1996 300 tdi back in the Spring. In the last few months, I've seen many older discos going for more than that, some of which were a in poorer state too.

Hi there make sure you put that lpg under serious load as the older lpg kits are prone to backfiring under load:confused: find a right steep hill and make her strain.heard loads of solutions some say its a service issue some say wrong plugs etc one thing I do know is if it backfires you get problems :eek: .they will tell you its an easy fix so get them to fix it then try again might be ok good luck with it

Well schedule in with the mechanic for HGF and a motor rebuild and get a repair manuel some tools , and a second job so you can keep it running. Please go to the range rover /v8 section and read about all the problems about the motors as they are the same motor and the 4.0 is the worst
 
Well the old man has just panic bought a 300tdi - p plate, standard spec, it's only a year or so newer then the M plate 300 he's sold me, that's being broken!

We've had words as he's bought it for 1750 from a local garage, with 200k on the clock, with a new engine at 105k. New MOT and 3month warranty. All advisories have been done. but when he took it out on a test run, the Bonnet catch snapped and the bonnet ended up wrapped around the windscreen, however the garage knocked £150 off for this and have straightened it out a bit and fixed the Bonnet catch.

I think it was a bad decision as I offered him use of my 200tdi until he upped his budget/ found something decent. It's already had welding done this year - about £150 and a few hundred last year :/

Hopefully he'll sell the motor home in the summer, and buy a decent disco 2 or range rover, and stick a caravan on the back.

If he bought a "decent" disco 2 or range rover, there's nothing to say that it would cost him less in the long run. Chances are, he has gone down the most cost effective route. Disco 2's have their own problems, many of which are far more costly to repair and as for rangies, I won't even go there...

I could have afforded a pretty disco 2 when I got my disco 1 but I thought the disco 1 would be the most sensible option. Time will tell but many on here will tell you it's cheaper to run and maintain an old disco 1 than it is to run a disco 2.

At the end of the day, if you buy a Landy, you aint gonna get cheap, trouble free motoring. That's probably one of the first things I learned about them lol. Believe it or not, it would actually work out far cheaper to buy and maintain a much newer BMW, Audi or Mercedes but I'm sure most people on ere have plenty to say about the people who choose to do that. ;)

Well been and looked over it today and it's ok, not mint but ok, he's going to have it undersealed to try and preserve it. There is some surface rust so that will be treated. It's an XS model with the wheel arch plastics and thicker bump strips, also has Defender Alloys (5 spokes from a Td5 age range) with Goodyear wrangler ATs on them. Load bay cover etc is there and it's got grey black half leather interior with the land rover logo on the cloth parts. It's in dark red too looks ok tbh. Needs a little bit of TLC but maybe not a bad buy
