I have a small problem with the exhaust manifold on my TD5 (as do many!).

The previous owner ran a remap, which I have since removed, but the manifold has already warped slightly and the gasket has blown on the side closest to the firewall.

I am removing the old manifold and will be replacing it with a new one. This is clearly not the first time that the car has had this problem as one of the holes in the engine block has been enlarged to fit an M10 stud.

Sadly the thread in this M10 hole has been destroyed by the latest warping and I am a bit stuck as to what to do.

Can I drill it out and tap it to M12 and use an M12 stud and nut?

Can I drill it out to M12 and use a helicoil and M10 stud and nut?

What are people's thoughts?

Thanks.

Fit an M10 helicoil, get manifold machined flat otherwise it will do it again

Thanks lynall. Do you mean enlarge the hole to M12 and then fit M10 helicoil?

What do you think about Time Serts (solid thread repairers, rather than the spring type)?

Is it OK to use an M10 to M8 stepped bolt, or are they frowned upon?

Thanks.

Thanks, I've got it now.

Are these really recommended over a new manifold?

I have removed the previous owner's remap, so it won't be running as hot anymore.
Yes as a new one will only warp again... Remapped or not they warp unfortunately
