am i right in saying that there are two generations of td5 engine? one of them being the one with plastic dowels (the not very good one). what wer the main problems with the td5s?? if there is such a thing as a 2nd generation td5 engine did they sort out the problems or not??

cheers for help in advance

The engines are the same. The nylon head location dowels were replaced with steel ones to prevent head slippage.
Early TD5s had cylinder head cracking issues but supposedly the later ones addressed this problem. Look for an external fuel spill pipe running from the front of the engine to the fuel regulator as these are the later heads. Other than that they are the same.

ok cheers. do u no much about the 2.5td 19j engine if so could you help me? ive posted a thread under 2.5 td enigne starting problems?
if not cheers ne way!

Are the new injectors compatible with older TD5 engines without any work or collateral problem ?

i think later injectors can work in early head but not the other way round
The later injectors (green collars) can be used in earlier heads but the very early ECUs wont accept the full range of later injector codes. The engine will run though there may be problems with spray patterns and uneven running.

You can physically fit the early injectors (black or green collars) to a later engine but the injector camshaft profile was changed to give more travel. They may also be mechanically noisy which can cause wear to the injector operating arms and followers. The later injectors operate at much higher injection pressures (3000 bar rather than 2200 bar) so the ECU may also struggle to adjust fuelling correctly via the spill solenoids.

Fit the correct ones and you'll have no wucking forries.
