I know because I've read this forum that lots of people blank their EGRs. It's not something I've given much thought to so far. One reason is that looking at MOT history (and in the rear view mirror) I know my TD5 has some emissions history. Logic suggests that the EGR is there to improve emissions so blanking it will make any emissions issue worse.

It looks like the issue has now been forced though. It's in the garage for a misfire and the the mechanic is strongly recommending blanking.

So... once it's blanked what should I expect? A massive boost in power? A massive boost in smoke? Both?

From personal experience, a massive boost in not a lot frankly.
I removed mine because I didn't particularly like the idea of injecting some of the dirty, manky, filthy results of combustion back into the cylinders and try to burn it again. I've always preferred the idea of burning fuel with "clean" fresh air. I can't say I've noticed any real change in performance, and the exhaust check on the MoT has thrown up nothing.
The EGR was introduced to meet the regulations of some countries where LR exports to.

And me, I took off the manifold and blasted it out with the local farmers jet wash after I blanked the EGR it was filthy, so I am happy to cut off all that muck, but no power surge or leap in MPG.

Agree with the comments above. Blanking the EGR should in theory save you some problems in the future. My landy is also fitted with a stainless pipe as the back box kept blowing holes! Yes its loud but its hassle free.

Iv also been using shell or bp to fill up with around 50-100ml of Millers additive to keep it clean.

Before a 150 mile drive the tank was 3/4's full and was just above the 1/2 mark at the end.

Conclusion:
No noticeable differances just piece of mind that your treating your disco with some respect!

Also the EGR would improve emmissions only if it's working perfectly, IMO not the case for a 10-16 year old system... if the valve is clogged with muck or sticking it can make the emissions worst...get rid of it withouit remorse

Removing the EGR will do nothing much if anything for power, EGR does no operate on acceleration so that is unchanged. If the EGR valve was sticking open that would certainly reduce power and efficiency. If the EGR is working correctly and you remove it there will be no difference at all in performance, but you don't have to clean the crap out of the EGR valve on a regular basis.

My 2P worth......

Made a big difference to my TD5, power and consumption. Will be fitting a de-cat down pipe next etc.
Thing is if they (EGR) are working correctly I guess the difference could be minimal, however chances are they its not working correctly, combination of power design and fouling from deposits contributes to them failing. They are simply not required in UK for diesels and only serve to starve the engine of fresh air.

Use plus gas on warm bolts to remove
Use copper silicone on blanking plates
Agree with mewl20004 clean the sensor at same time!

I stripped out the EGR, DPF and back box, my TD5 runs cleaner according to the MOT Smoke test, as standard when I bought it, it was 2.50/3.00 after ripping all that crap out and making everything less restrictive last MOT Smoke test was 0.81/3.00.
