New to land rovers and have been looking into them for sometime, ive just bought a 1999 auto discovery td5 which has had a new oil pump and turbo fitted 6 months ago, today whilst the wife was driving we had a slight rattle start which turned into a knock coming from the top of the engine,we stopped on the hard shoulder as soon as (thanks to the tdi discovery driver who asked if we were ok)checked the oil and water levels and all seemed ok but noticed white smoke wafting from the oil filler cap,the engine was still running but was turned off as soon as we stopped and has not been re-started since to stop any furthur damage, we were relayed by the AA to my bro in laws workshop where he will have a look in the morning, the discovery has done 98000 miles and has loads of service history and stamps, any pointers what could be the problem....

cheers Garry :)

Well had a productive day today and got alot done, well not me i have a fractured arm lol but my bro in law has diagnosed the knocking as the bottom end :( and the lump is nearly ready to be pulled from the engine bay,two choices secondhand lump where you dont realy know what your getting and still pay over 1k plus or regrind and shell etc this lump,i will know more in the morning when the engine gets pulled and flipped over...

Sorry to hear that mate. Was the pump and turbo changed before you bought it? It may have had an oil pump failure and that is terminal in most cases on the TD5 although its normally the top end that suffers before the bottom end is damaged. It would also explain the need for a new turbo as the bearings rely on full pressure oil to keep the turbo shaft cool and centred.

Have you looked at a short engine from Turners?

Turner Engineering - Replacement and Remanufacturer of Land Rover Engines including 300TDI, 200TDI, TD5, V8, turbo diesel & petrol etc, available from stock

They are the best in the business as far as I'm concerned and no I dont have shares in the company before you ask :)

Hi Shifty been on me hols so not been around, anyway engine was purchased through my bro in laws place of work with a bit of discount special to him lol, should have cost i think £3600 inc vat but he managed to get it for £3000 inc vat,ive also had a new thermostat fitted and a new radiator too with other sundries, its had a full service and filled with 5w30 fully synthetic oil which will be changed in 500 miles time along with new oil filters for the 12k/12 months warranty, everything was cleaned and examined prior swapping everything over and she fired up with the first flick of the key,now ive been running her in gentley and everything seems fine and hunky question is do i need to have the td5 put on a nanocom or hawkeys diagnostic equipment to make sure everything is deffo ok as my bro in law does not have these,he only has mercedes and obd diagnostic stuff or does the td5's own ecu self learns itself like most others...

Garry :)

Thats not a bad price for a full engine. Especially as LR have them on back order for more than 18 months.
You dont need to be too gentle with running it in. Just dont red line it or labour it. Other than that just drive normally. If you're too gentle the bores can glaze which is why you should not let diesel engines idle with no load for extended periods.

We use ivor searle engines at work for the vans seen quite a few go through the place now not seen one come back yet.
