td5 disco seems low on power till turbo kicks in

hi all,im not sure if this is how its supposed to be but my td5 disco seems smooth but numb until the turbo kicks in then it goes like s/o/a stick,all is completely original still got egr valve and cat,dont know if theres any difference but mine is 2003 my dad had a 2000 and he said his pulled from start to finish,
it drives well but if i boot it up a hill whilst turbo in it goes like hell but when i change gear if it drops just below where the turbo kicks in it looses everything and i have to wait for a gradual build back to the turbo again.also im only getting around 22mpg even on the motorway at 60-70mph.
if this is normal thats fine if not could someone point me in the right dirrection what to look at or for,ive been told the maf sensor could be causing this but not sure and dont know how to test.

have you driven a turbo before? It could be lag or it could be something more serious if its seriously down on power

might be a MAF sensor gone tits up

Yes m8 had turbos rs renault and 300tdi.its not serious just feels a bit numb

Is there a way to check the maf sensor can i just unplug it or will it show a code on reader
