Only when its under load going up long hills, its been fine all day pottering about.

radiator is free of mud, hoses are not pressurised and its not loosing coolant.

but gauge goes into the red and it boils over up long hills

Any ideas

Thermostat or pump it could be the head gasket but you would normaly have presure build up in the system if it is. Much higher presure than normal that is

Id say its your water pump then, dont let it over heat or you risk blowing the head gasket. Park it until its fixed maybe best. Wait and see what the rest of gang on here have to say. Best of luck

Is there a chance its the expansion tank cap.

I think im going to change et cap , thermostat and waterpump then hope for the best

If you do those things you can be 99% sure you won't need to hope for the best because you will have done the best.

sorry to kidnap the topic but just a quick question...
my 52 td5 110 van when goin down the motorway full tilt will flick up to the red and the engine will throttle right off and then it will go back to just below half again and it will start to accelerate again... bit annoying when overtaking as it drops to 50 :O
thanks for any advice

Try changing the coolant temp sensor first.

Are you suffering any loss of coolant? If the temp sensor doesn't work then I would suggest a new thermostat and expansion cap.

im going to check coolant and swop the sensor... dya know how much the temp sensor and air flow meter are?
thanks ratty

coolant sensor is about £16. Thermostat is about £15. Rad cap is either £4 or £8 depending on year. MAF is about £40. Unless you find it's taking forever to accelerate it's not the MAF.

52 plate mate ;)
also i was taking forever to get place and then i fitted a cone K+N i got for £15 off my mate but i needed to take the air flow meter off to fit it and now it goes like stick... those saxos n beemers dno wts hit them haha

lloks like it was mud on the inside of the rad under the cowel and between the intercooler :D:doh:

The radiator is a "WATER TO AIR" heat exchanger. It is not really a "radiator" at all - it is a heat exchanger at best, and a convector if you must.

Water can contain more HEAT per unit mass than almost any other substance, perhaps four thousand times as much as air.

So, we need several THOUSAND times as much air as water to carry away the heat from the engine coolant- and that means a lot of air has to pass straight through the fins of the radiator, air-to-metal, and not air-to-MUD!

I just went out this very minute and air-jetted the radiator fins of my 2004 Disco TD5. Quite a bit of crap came out, so it was worth doing.

Off-Roaders should be very careful to clean their rads after every trip.

30 seconds if coolant failure could cost any of us a whole engine.
OUCH!
