Hi all does anybody know of a reccomendable head supplier,as my brain has almost popped!
Started having rough running(like on four cylinders) about 50miles ago. Checked round engine and saw fuel dripping from fpr, noticed fuel pump noisy (whistling gurling) no smoke. Checked water ok, Checked oil ok, no other substansial leaking anywhere.
Ordered new fpr, gasket, diesel filter and injector seals just incase, thought while im at it il do oil change filter and spin filter.
Drained old oil out, no trace of diesel in that! Changed filter and spinny thing, filled engine with 6l of oil, thought when i ran it up id top up as necessary.
Changed fpr and gasket (bit fiddely but some good guidance on here) bled fuel system using ign on depress acc pedal 8times, repeated bleed noticing fuel pump still noisy. Started engine and found lots of white smoke emitted smelling of diesel, took for test drive found white smoke subsided after about 3 miles (thought it was excess fuel in cylinders) did a further 10 miles pretty much smoke free, got back on the drive then the white smoke returned.
Checked oil level and found it was over the H mark!!! thought i must have cocked a seal up so had rocker cover off and smelt diesel, had all the injectors out again no trace of it getting past those new seals.
Drained all the oil out and found i had just over 8 liters of liquid. Thought it must be going somewhere! Had a fag an a beer and sat and scatched my head in thought...........
Turned ign on to prime pump and diesel ran out of the sump plug hole! I am thinking this means head gasket or cracked head any of you chaps can confirm that????
Ideas??

Id be tempted to do injector seals and washers again, before condemning head, did you use genuine lr seals and washers as there are some ropey seals about

Of course don't condem it without being sure, look on the thread I mention to see how Mark checked to find the way that the diesel was excaping. Using a simple check he found that it's possible to see the leak and nail the source.

Used landrover seals and washers, no fuel around injectors in rocker cover.
With all oil drained and sump plug out when you prime the fuel, diesel runs out of sump plug hole, turn key off and the flow stops, turn key on again and diesel runs out the sump plug hole, sorry but cant see how this can be injector seals

Might be good to take the rocker cover off first and turn on the ignition, when the pump starts and the fuel line in the head becomes pressurised you might see the diesel oozing out which should give you the source of the leak. Hope it is the injector o ring this would be relatively easy to fix

Thanks but have tried that, which led me to daraining the oil out and looking at what come out the sump plug. I have a friend who owns a car repair garage and we spoke at length about the feul system yesterday, just couldnt figure out where diesel was going. I think taking the head off is going to show more than we can see at the mo.
Have you any ideas on a replacement head? Price? Trustworthy supplier?
Thanks nhted

I am not absolutely sure on prices, may be best to google it and see whats out there, I know there are various options starting with:

As Mark did there is a man on e-bay who welds them and then re machines the injector pocket, you can see some comments on the other thread I added regarding this service , I don't have any experience so better to contact people who have first hand.

You can buy various aftermarket heads (my own has one fitted, but it was done before I bought it), they vary in price and probably quality I hear that Turner engineering supply high quality heads and the comments you see are usual quite favorable. But all of the big LR parts suppliers seem to have an option.

You may find second hand heads on e-bay or other places, this is a pays your money and takes your choice option, of course some will be good, but there are many people out there who are less than scrupulous, if you go this way find someone who has a good reputation and will offer some kind of warranty.
Also remember you need a gasket kit and new head bolts as they stretch when you fit them and should only be used once. You have to factor this in and consider the implications of having to do it again if a replacement head fails.

Thanks very much for that i had been reccomended to use turners, my defender is my work truck and as im self employed it helps to have wheels lol
I dont think id risk a second hand one and ive had experience of weld repairs on Various other vehicles ive owned, i think new with a gaurantee would work better for me

Best to choose the option that suits your circumstances, if you rely on the truck you dont want to loose business because it's letting you down.
Forgot to mention the other option some people choose that is to get a used engine from a good breaker, the discovery II uses the TD5 engine and there seems to be a supply of used engines from scrapped vehicles. Sometimes this is a cheaper option than a new head.

Just seen this thread, Had a similar thing happen, Stripped the head down and took it to a place called Ivor Searle engineering in Soham. The pressure tested it and supplied a new head as the fuel gallery was cracked, Very helpful guys there.
