TD5 Clutch problem

I have a friend with a TD5/90.

Here is his problem,

He has been having trouble with his clutch in that he has to keep pumping it up to get pressure.

He changed the master cylinder and rebuilt the slave, same thing happens.

He says, when he is in traffic, no problem, the clutch maintains pressure.
However if he is on a long run where he does not have to use the clutch, it looses all pressure and he cannot shift until he pumps it up again. But in the mornings no problem, good pressure.
He says that he is not loosing any fluid and that he mechanic says that he has bled the system twice.

Keep in mind that this is not a LR mechanic but is a good mechanic none the less.

Any ideas?

Do you have to take the gearbox out to be able to bleed the clutch fluid from the slave cylinder on a TD5???

no ,rebuilding the slave probably hasnt cured leak ,fluid needs a bigger leak than air ,or new master is poor or badly adjusted, splashing in reservoir when pedals pumped would indicate poor master clyinder

So I can get at the slave without removing anything? on a TD5.

My 300tdi is so easy.

Actually, The TD5 is not here, Its a friend that is having problems.

His mechanic is telling him that to bleed the slave cylinder he has to remove the gear box.
This sounds unlikely??

total rubbish slave is bolted on externally like a 300 tdi ,and unlike 300 tdi release lever is cast type like fitted to series trucks so very unlikely to give trouble

The slave cylinder bleed nipple is the thing with the yellow cap on. No need to take anything off

Are you sure its air in the fluid and not just a weak vacuum?

I really don't know, but my friend did also mention that the clutch pedal is going to the floor when he shifts.
Something is not correct.

How would he check the vacuum?

OK, I did some more digging.

My friend does not have a TD5, he has the 2.4 Ford TDCi.
And that one has the slave cylinder mounted inside and the gear box has to come off!!!!!

So his problem is even worse, for him to bleed the cylinder, the box has to drop.

Glad I own a 300TDi
