Hi Guys I have just returned home after being dropped of a recovery truck!! Driving along the motorway and sudden loss of power followed by the most intense cloud of continuous white oily smoke out of the exhaust. pulled over and it was indeed burning oil. could this be a turbo failure or something more sinister?

Disco td5 1999
150k

Head Gasket done
fuel pressure relief valve done
Radiator done
injector oil seals done

Thanks guys hav removed the pipework to the inter cooler sure enough there is oil contamination. vanes on the compressor side of the turbo have small chips on them and the play in it is what I would deem excessive so it looks like the turbo is fubar .Obviously the turbo will need replacing and the intercooler will need flushing out as well as the oil will need changing. Anything else I need to look for while its all in bits?

Have found a brand new turbo on ebay for 350 quid all in it has the oem part number pmf000040 for a defender td5 Whats the difference between this one and a pmf 500040 which I understand is the correct one for my disco or is it just a straight swap?

Bought the defender turbo, removed everything including the inlet manifold and flushed it all out with a gallon of unleaded inlet was full of sticky black goo I think this stopped any pieces going into the cylinder bores, changed the oil put it all back together and it is sweet. Think the turbo must have been on its way out for a while as on startup I used to get loads of smoke, Not any more. will drop the oil and change the filters again after 500 miles just to make sure Thanks to everyone who quoted
