IVe bought myself a set of wee blue LED bulbs to tart up my TD5 instrument panel , Iv e changed all of them except the clock . There is a bulb in it cos it lights up . however ive taken it out of the panel and it seems to me the whole thing is sealed . the bulbs are hidden in there somewhre . Ive just found a bit in haynes where it says post 2002 defenders have non-replacable LED instrument bulbs . Anyone managed to change the bulb in the clock ????

The clock on a Td5 has 4 small led's on the printed circuit board within the clock. It is possible to strip the clock and replace with coloured, I did mine today. They are soldered onto the circuit board so you have to unsolder the originals and solder on the new. It's fiddly but not difficult, I only swapped 2 as that was enough to give off enough colour as the other clocks. Also the green lighting of the originals comes from a green layer on the back of the clock face, this I just carefully sanded off with a fine sandpaper.

Whilst we are talking td5 bulbs has anyone seen the crazy price charged by the main dealer for the two in the speedo, hmm got quoted £15 each
Am gonna go to allmakes me thinks

Just had a look on eBay and I might as well fit led for longetivity don't suppose yas know the other type bulb part number by chance?
I don't have a time clock so it's ok

Ok only just seen your last post......
If you go down the led route and you don't think you fancy stripping the clock, and doing a bit of soldering then go for green led's.
Don't go for a ready made kit, you just need 2 509t's and 4 T5's...... If you fancy a stab at the clock as well it's 6 T5's.
Bugger you ain't got a clock so get any bloody colour you like!! Haha

Ooh get you!! How is the Rev counter lit?? Have a look first, if it's like the clock then best go for green led's...... as easy as it is to strip the clock and solder new ones on, the clock is only £25 to replace and not £100's lol

Rev counter uses same bulb holder as fuel and temp gauge
Interesting to note the mod for the clock bulbs
Top effort for ur support
Appreciated

Your laughing then, go for any colour you like - even the disco ones!! Lol
Always glad to help, I've pm'd you some item numbers, this guys stuff is quality, I found out the hard way that there is a big difference in quality on eBay!!

Help????? My 2001 TD5 90 Speed was dark - I removed it and the bulbs are missing! Presumably someone before tried to replace and gave up. I can understand. I ordered some 509T LED's from flea-bay but could not get them to fit. I therefore ordered some standard 509T's 'coz I thought that would do the business and no issues over polarity. The standard 509T's do not fit down the two bulb holes in the back of the TD5 speedo. I filed the edge off the bulbs just to try but I could not get them to lock into the socket - even with various tools I made to help! OMG - who designed this speedo thing! Its crazy - or maybe my info and research is wrong and 509T's just fit the other clocks and I need something else for the speedo. Maybe I should just live in the dark - so much easier in many respects :-( Any help or pointers appreciated

Have you removed the speedo from the binnacle or are you trying to do it in situ? A lot easier with it removed and face down on the bench, I just used some long needle nosed pliers which seemed to do the job without too much hassle.

Hi thanks for the reply - yes I removed the whole thing. Does anyone know for sure whether 509t's are the right bulb here? There seems to be various forums which says yes, maybe the normal bulbs I recently got sent are not the correct ones?
