Hello all and thankyou for having me....

Ive recetly purchased an 04 discovery TD5 and the forum has helped a great amount with a few of the niggles.. im hoping that maybe it will help with the latest issue, but i fear it may not be able to.

i have just sent the vehicle in for service and it isnt good news, i did suspect something was amiss with the smal cloud of smoke after idling a while and setting off but not to the extent the mechanc has just told me.

It seems it is burning oil, he seemed to think it was terminal.

So, my questions.

Does anybody run a Td5 that burns and is it OK to do that and just keep topping up the oil?

Where would be the best place to look for a second hand engine and is it worth the risk?

Where is best for fully recon engines inc fitting etc and is it worth the cost?

Sorry for all the questions.

Thanks in advance

Mike

So it seems my mechanic has little knowledge re defenders like he says so.... I've done 300 miles on the TD5 with zero loss of oil, it seems to smoke when the vehicle has been sat idling in traffic and I pull off. researching on here leads me to think maybe Turbo oil seals, has anyone come across this before?

Mike

hi normally its valve seals.if turbo seals normally continousley when driving. you can drop that stp thick oil in which stops the smoking for a few thousand miles.other than that drop the head off and do oil seals. you can take the hose off the turbo and see if its oily in there and see if you can rock the impeller up and down much

Hi there.

Thanks for the reply. What price would you expect to pay at a garage to replace the velve seals?
