TD5 Autos - are they just weird?

I'm driving an auto TD5 D2 at the moment - she seems gutless :(

I've only ever driven autos on holiday but this D2 just runs weird.

Sure she gets up to speed - but in twice the time my manual does.

If I'm cruising downhill, she seems to drop into neutral and the revs fall to 1500 and then I seem to have to really boot her to get her to re-engage.

Its probably just me being insensitive but she just does not feel right.

Is there anything obvious I can/should check?

Sounds like dropping into top,try not using drive but 3 as vr6 van I have does similar on bends at 30

Dropping into top sounds like it should be in some sort of gear - it feels more like she's dropping out of gears altogether.

Is keeping her in 3rd a simple test for this or a long term solution?

I've been told by loads of people that the autos are great - surely they don't like accelerating so slowly and then coasting in neutral - do they?

i didn't like the auto, freewheels down hill or thats what it felt like, got a speeding ticket as no engine break, so fooked it off after 14days, pure ****e, manual for me!!

Try it report back,

The autos are funny to drive normally, they need a earlier lockup torque converter IMO.

But yeah it should still make acceptable progress so maybe you do have an engine fault.

They always rev as if the clutch is slipping when accelerating but should have respectable acceleration.

Until the box locks up (at around 56 mph in 4th, when it feels like another change up) it does freewheel when you take your foot off the accelerator.

The handbook tells you all this.......

Clutch slipping - that was exactly how I was going to describe it after yesterday's trip.

56mph seems to be the critical speed - once there she does not fall back to idle all the time - I should RTFM I guess!

In a drag race with my older, manual, D2 the manual would easily win - but, using the electronic gadget, I can find no proof of any problems (eg nothing in the MAF).
Perhaps I should just relax and drive more sedately.

Anyway, having read UrbanPanzer's website should I change the oil/filter in the auto box?

And is there a howto thread/site on 'D2 auto enhancements' or 'living with a D2 auto'?
