talking to a guy other day,he bought a TDv6 or disco 3 in September, he has been recovered 4 times by green flag and has been un move able twice on his drive, had other scary fits of mechanical spasms, so he says he going to dig a big hole and loose it! as he works for a pipe laying utility company, as the reason he bought it to travel to where he is working on such a line
not very good for a 2008 TDV6 with only 22,000 miles
so either TD5 as got to be better than one of these!!

I have looked at a few D3's as I do like them, but they are very complex vehicles and appear to be a bit fragile. I will be sticking with by D2 TD5.

yes the bhp is the same, it's the performance and fuel you want, the car has got the EGR still intact, is it advisable to take off soon as?

Yes it is, use a good quality kit. Also if the car is before 2002, remove the catt'd exhaust downpipe.

Both mods improve mpg and performance.

Also these engines respond VERY well to a Dynachip re-map; better performance and better mpg.

my last disco a 2000 manual was chipped/remapped, it flew and was good on juice, i had ironed all the problems out, except rust!!!!!
so it had to go, de EGR'd etc., now after pondering what to replace it with,we have got another a 2004 auto,so it seems a bit flat to my old girl get up and go, so back out to rectify the flatness, would of preferred a manual, but these cars are getting old, abused etc., so after looking for 8-9 months finally found one(hopefully) a good one, clean and rust free, it will have to be hoisted up by the jcb to be waxolyed then we are ready for winter, maybe dryer than summer!!!????

No probs at all.

I've just noticed you're in Aberdeenshire. Before moving to France we were stayed near Fyvie.

Dave

I am just outside Stonehaven, but only for another couple of weeks / months until the house is sold, as we are moving to the Manchester area. although France would be nice :)

picked new TD5 54 plate ES Premium up yesterday, had a good look around her today as a rare commodity was shinning, on the drive home as it is a auto, only really driven an auto as a curtsey car, feels like driving a car with the clutch slipping! will have to get used to it!
seems to be ok with power, had 2 new fuel filters and oil done, wants egr doing, but it is no where near to how my old manual was, top end seems to be around 90mph, that was it, nothing left, will have to see about a re-map!
few thing to be taken off, got one of those stainless steel spare wheel covers and plastic window trims, not me,

it still rains down here! france would be drier?

France IS drier - but anywhere is drier than Manchester, isn't it:bounce:

Have you changed the air filter? Strongly recommended.

Not sure but as your new one is a 2004 you might have to keep your particulate filter (ie CAT) in place for MOT purposes, might be worth checking.

Re the "slipping clutch" feel of the auto, this is due to an under spec torque converter. There is a very effective mod of replacing the TC with one from a v8 car which reduces slip significantly, aids mpg and performance.

I agree when I first had mine I was quite worried. But you do get used to it - mine tends to stay at around 2500 rpm when accelerating which is more than I'd really like but not actually a problem.

been on bit of a run today, have to say weather just the same, pi-----g down all day! Autumn is here, straight from spring,
was going to lift bonnet and have a mess about, To wet, no garage still until we take possession of new house, solicitors!!!!
Air filter, de EGR'd, should make a difference? What about Transmission oil?
have sort of got used to it a little, Drives spot on, lot smoother than the old girl, Quieter, bit of a noise when you turn to the left, power steering may need a bleed? other than that ok!
Mrs likes it, she's glad to be back up where she can see again, didn't really bother me as i have me Van,

does that mean changing the entire box?

im a lazy bugger when it comes to cog swopping, so id never consider anything other than an auto, even like the sound of hondas semi auto in their bike, its the vfr1200 i think

Sorry to drag this old thread up but thought it was a good place to ask my questions!
A couple of years have gone by since these answers so I was wondering if there was any better products on the market to improve mpg and performance of an auto disco (I'm looking at a 2001-2003 discovery). I would of preferred a manual but there seems to be more choice of autos.
Also what is the best way to check for problems with an auto box on a test drive?

depends what you are going to do with your disco
if you are going greenlaning, pay and play - get manual. trust me you will enjoy
however, if she is going to be your daily driver, consider auto.

Low mileage commuter mainly with some light off road at weekends :)

I disagree, I would choose the auto for off road all day every day. The only disadvantages with the auto off road IMO is the lack of engine braking when descending, you don't get as much as with the manual. The manual engine braking in low is very impressive, however the HDC works well in the D2.
If you are going to wade 'very deep' a manual would be better, but best not to as we all know TD5's don't really like getting too wet, the auto box is just adding to more 'leccy bits.

On the road in first and second in the manual can be hard work, esp round town but once your in third and upwards it's fine and I prefer the manual. The Auto just revs and doesn't seem to go anywhere once you get above about 30mph and it changes into third until the TC stops slipping and locks up low 50's mph.

Each to their own, drive both and decide for yourself ;)

HTH.

More autos on the road as they are big, heavy cars with lorry like gearbox's, so a slow change and people prefer the easy life of the auto.

MPG is considerably noticeably worse around town with the auto as to be expected.

Drive it from cold and check there's no nasty noises, changes smooth, torque converter locks up when it's warmed through at approx 52mph. Try it manually using the selector and run it through the gears in low range.

Worst case sinario £1,260 will get you a recon auto box fully fitted from Ashcroft transmissions in Bedfordshire.
