How do!

Had a 2000 TD5 with a Auto-Box for the last 8 month's and have gone from hate to bloody loving it :)

But there is one thing that realy pishes me off, I can't seem to be able to drive it under 2000rpm. Can you with yours ???

Yes all the gears are there, torque converter locks OK, it just seems to be in the revs all the time.

Could a knacked MAF effect it??? I know it's knacked cos I bust it trying to clean it but there's little difference when it's disconected.

A re-map out here in France is out of the question as it's pre 2002 and would have to send the ECU off to be done.

Would a plug in jobby make any differance? do they do one for the gearbox ecu??

Thanks in advance

Jason

No the MAF wont affect it, and no theres no "plug in" box for the Gearbox ECU.

Are you sure theres actually anything wrong, sounds to me like your not used to "how" it should be, or you was expecting something different.

You have to work the slush box for it to "work", thats how it is, she won't change gear in high box under 2000 rpm as it just wont build up enough speed / pressure to do it.

Most if not all the time she'll rev to anywhere between 2200 - 2500 RPM before it changes, and that time taken can be affected obviously by the cold weather / temp of the gearbox oil etc.

The ECU wont "allow" it to change as early when its cold as it will when its warmed up.

Cheers

I know there is nothing wrong with it as my mate has the same, was just wondering if anything could be done about it.

I can pull out of our village in 5th in my 110 (2.5 petrol) (can even do it in the wifes gaylander) up and down moderate hills to the next town without a gear change. Where as the Auto is up and down the gears revving it's bollix off!

Yes, I can agree with that, it does seem to be phaffing about alot in lower gears which obviously burns more fuel, it lacks 'positivity' if there is such a word. My 98 series 300tdi does not appear to behave like that so I was also concerned about this aspect, but it does seem to be a trait. Perhaps the workshop manual might give some insight into the rpm at which the box should change gear when in the lower speed ranges. Perhaps moving the selector manually may be a better option but that then negates the reason for buying an auto in the first place.

Mine does it as well but I've got used to it. First auto I've had and at first it seems as though the clutch is slipping all the time.

I have an 03 Td5 auto. Mine does exactly the same. Worse when it's cold. I work pretty close to home so my Disco never gets time to heat up, I find it changes best if you just bury the pedal and hold it about 2500 rpm. She just bangs up through the gears nicely. Most of the time i'm getting about 20 mpg out of mine. I'm looking at a tuning box for it after Christmas, I have been told it will increase power and torque and help with the fuel economy slightly.........

I'm the same 1.9miles to work and the same back, never gets warm, hence my mpg in my sig.
Try to take it on longer runs at the weekend.

if you constantly USE this extra power and torque....you will find your MPG goes Down...if you just drive it as you did prior to fitting the tuning box, you may see a very slight increase.

Logic says with a chip it's going to have more bottom end torque with less gear changes......Yeh?

I fitted a RoverRon synergy PD tuning box to my manual TD5...deffinitely improved the low down torque very noticeably...which is exactly what I wanted, so was a good buy for me at only £165 delivered.

Result:)

Thanks for that !

As far as I know the engine is at its most efficient between 2000-2250 rpm. So the electronics are maximising efficiency for you.
