Hi guys, was laning today...was all up hill for an hour ish, wheels were spinning on some wet, loose & shredded bark...Heard a big bang, all drive went, M+S starts flashing and the red transmission overheating symbol came on...So let it cool for 20 mins....Restarted it, no M+S, no temp light...Great, But in D no drive!

Reverse & 1st gear work, if i start off in 1st, then 2nd, 3rd, then knock into Drive above say 15mph...it drives perfect, but if i slow right down or stop, it will clunk an lose drive and have to repeat above process to move again...Drove 70 odd miles home in drive, only went into limp (M+S flash) once, turn it off and on again, its gone...Wheres best place to start? XyZ or new gearbox?

cheers

Had the exact same issue for about a year. I tried the Xyz switch and didn't help. The situation deteriorates over time, at some point you might not be able to switch out of 1st anymore... Happened to me, but adding a liter of oil helped change into 3rd limp mode again... See if you have any leaks on the gearbox, it doesn't have to leave drops in the driveway, mine only leaked while driving. Your first, cheapest and easiest fix would be to add some oil. I was going to add more tomorrow to see if it revives it completely, but my engine commuted suicide tonight :(

Please let us know what happens, I'm curious if that would've been all the same issue on mine too, when I considered changing the gearbox before.

The best to start is to read the fault code stored in the autobox ECU and go from there otherwise it can be an expensive guessing game which can end up bad if you keep driving it this way... as happened to others. There can be 19 reasons for limp mode some of them engine related

I dont have a nanocom i can get hold of at the moment, so im a bit stuck...it only went into limp once, then turned off, started her up an it went off. Just i can only go thru the gears an then in into drive to drive it.

managed to get hold of a nanocom, gonna have a look, see what faults come up tonight acter work

That's a good move, report the code and i'll tell you more, from your description it could be switch related

Just checked faults in gearbox, only coming up with...

P0722 stall speed monitoring

reset it, no difference...other than when put in drive, it revved a bit, moved an inch and went into limp with M+S flashing...turn engine off & on, no limp, until goto drive and goes into limp.

Under 'inputs'...'general'
I looked at the gear switch W, X, Y, Z. Whilst moving the gear selector through Park, Reverse, Drive, 3, 2, 1...it was showing them opening an closing, as though it was doing what it should...Obviously im not sure, as to which should be open & closed when in what ever position the gear selector is in.

At least now you know from the beginning and there's no room for guessing, unfortunately that code means that the torque convertor is slipping so seems that you need a new one

you can try to confirm that code with a stall test too and prepare yourself to change the TC

Just done the stall test, it kicks into gear around 3000rpm and wants to jump over the chocks...so im guessing, its the gear box itself slipping??

What's certain is that something is slipping and that box needs specialist involvment or to be replaced with a working one, my knowledge about this issue ends here as it's too mechnical for me

I have the fitting kit to fit a v8 tc from ashcroft transmissions...that was always the plan, so suppose this is the kick up the ass to get the box off now ‍...ill probably just find a recon box or get my own recon'd...been a great help as always, thanks mate
