TD5 Air Suspension

Bought a td5 (Y reg) 9 weeks ago, a few days ago the rear suspension dropped , took it back to Stratsone and they told me it was either Compressor and or EC unit, and was not covered by warranty. Quoted me a price for the job as £1,050 . Anybody modified back to springs and done away with the air etc.

What a load of rubbish !!!!!

If you only got the car 9 weeks ago, Then it is covered for all repairs !!!!

Im sick to death of main dealers taking the **** out of there customers!!!

Right this is what you do on monday,

Go into Stratstones and demand they repair the vehicle at there expense, The fact that you only got it 9 weeks ago gives you a very strong case in law, Remind them of there duty under the sale of goods act, also threaten them with trading standards !!!!

Cheers,been back in touch with them, told me it was not part of the warranty that I had signed,the warranty tells of what is covered and what is not covered, no mention of suspension in either but one line says " the gradual reduction in operating performance (wear and tear) due to the age and mileage of the coverted vehicle"???
Although the vehicle is a Y reg it has only done 46k and in a very good condition. Have spent 2 hours argueing with the manager but he says it reflects on what we paid (£11.000) for it but no one mentioned this at the time.

We have a '99 TD5 which had the same problem ... plus plenty more !

Firstly the suspension's height sensors gave up on one side so the right hand air spring pumped itself up to maximum, we fixed that for a few weeks before the whole system decided to 'go flat' whenever you hit a bump. Probably a poor earth or electrical connection somewhere but after weeks of searching we could not find any answers.

The simple solution was to rip out the air springs and compressor, and slot in a pair of coils. Hey presto, problem solved. You need to get the round steel mounting plates that the coils sit on to, but apart from that it is very straightforward.

Hey Browndog, why do you have a photo of your blooming Land Cruiser as your avator when you've got 2 perfectly good (ha ha) Disco's as well? Get your camera out again!

Yes, true, I have two Land Rovers ... the Series 1 Disco has over 300k on unmade roads but still battles on ... the Series 2 Disco is a nightmare. We only have one official LR dealer in country and they are near useless (3 days for an oil change), parts are impossible to get and two years of African roads have simply killed the car. Faults include loads of problems with the electrical system, air suspension collapse, ABS / traction control problems, gearbox, rear door latch, body work falling off ... and more.

The sad reality is that although the Disco is a great car and gives an unmatched combinaton of on and off road ability, economy etc ... the Toyota beats it in almost every way when it comes to living in this part of the world.

Thanks for the imfo, that seems to be the long term answer.

It does not have to cost that much to repair SLS on a Disco - even at a main dealer,they should be able to carry out an accurate diagnosis to provide a quote to repair it.The Slabs Ecu is less than £200 +vat and the compressor is less than £300 +vat.Neither take much time to fit and its a couple of minutes on Testbook to programme the Slabs Ecu.
Apart from the porus airbags - and needing a new compressor because the leaking airbag was ignored,it doesnt have to be unreliable either.
The only problems I can see with converting back to coils is that 1,it should cost more than fixing the air system,(if you dont do it yourself) and 2,certainly in the UK the Disco II was never type approved with coils on the back as a seven seater.If yours is a five seater then this is not an issue,but if its seven then you may have insurance or resale problems.

I agree with Eight - there is no way it should cost that much to fix. Tell them to take a flying ****. Get it to a decent specialist and I reckon you will have it sorted for a few hundred quid max.

LR Main dealers are crap at diagnostics. They told me they needed the P38 for a whole day to diagnose a problem with the air suspension. 30 mins at my local LR specialist had it sorted!

hi,i dont know your location but i live in notts and i know a landrover specialist who can do the rear bags at 110 a side thats cash of course,recon compressor is about 125 just a thought cheers phil

They cant dodge there duty of care towards this vehicle !!!!!!

Thanks for the info all. Been to local L/R sorted out in a couple of hours. New compressor fitted, all sorted.It is a 7 seater but they suggested converting to coil springs and never have a problem again.They are forever having disco,s infor this conversion.

Now to hit the supplier with the bill.
