The water pump on my TD4 has started leaking and sounds like a bag of spanners clattering about. I've been looking at changing it out and have consulted both Haynes and Rave. Both manuals tell you to remove the camshaft cover.

Has anybody tackled this before?

Do you need to remove the camshaft cover as it involves removing all the injectors, new gasket etc?

Well, someone may correct me if im wrong, but im pretty sure that the procedure you described is the 'recommended' way of doing it. I think thats mainly as its connected to a solid metal coolant pipe that runs across the back of your engine, held in by a few bolts as well as the fact down the side of the engine isnt large enough to get the pump out.

On the other hand removing the rear metal pipe bolts , unbolting the engine steady from the subframe and lifting the engine up on an axle stand / jack, will give you enough room to get the pump out if you know what your doing and willing to get a little rough. At own risk though ofc :)

Its a case of being tight but do-able.
