TD4 turns over but will not run after work done

This was also the problem with mine a couple of weeks back.
Cleaned the connector and its been ok since.

But Irishrover says he has the single pump in the wheel arch,not the model with a tank pump and under bonnet jobby.
It does sound like fuel pump problems though.

Maybe the high pressure engine mounted one.I believe they can get air in them
when worn which can cause the problems you have.

the hp pumps dont really wear out as they are continually lubricated,they suffer from the occasional leak, but in general are very reliable, mechanical driven 3 piston positive displacement, very reliable compared the the electric lift pumps,
if you dont get pressure to the fuel filter your engine wont start, this it to protect the hp pump form running dry
 
Thanks Guys.....I'll pop up the garage in the morning and have a word with him.
It's unlikely that I will get the pump and filter until Monday anyway.

Up to around £580 so far plus oil, filter and anti freeze but not allowing for fuel pump, filter and garage labour.......oh, I forgot to add the price of a packet of fags for the tow to the garage !!

This is true.
But the mechanic I use for the horrible jobs has just replaced one on a rover 75.

He called an auto electrician to check out the electric side as the car would not start and the electrician said straightaway it would be an air bubble in the high pressure pump and he would be wasting his time.He was right.
New HP pump away it went.

It does sound like a dodgy pump on the low pressure side,I agree.
It needs a scan for codes.
When my tank on the wing played up it caused an EML.

Thanks for that...It seems that a fair few of you are thinking along the lines of a fuel pump issue, with the majority leaning toward the LP pump (The one behind the rear wing in my case).
Just so frustrating that just removing the injectors and the camshaft cover could kick off the chain of events :violent:
Will be down the garage later this morning to see what he has found. I know that a fault with the pressure readings from both the LP & HP pumps should be picked up with diagnostics.
Funny thing is I was going to get the diagnostic software for the TD4 engine from Blackbox Solutions for my Rovacomlite, I already have the CCU software, but this lot has hit the finances for a while :eek:
On the up side.....No problems with the Water Pump-that bit is sorted !!!:hysterically_laughi

If it does turn out to be the LP pump, I will have to order it before 2.00 p.m. in order to get it here on Monday.

giving the lp pump a tap can sometimes kick into life, i replaced mine a few months ago
£110 genuine part from ebay
 
Hi Guys.....It appears that you were spot on !! :praise:


Just phoned the garage and the fault has been diagnosed as "Low fuel pressure to the Injector pump".
Just ordered a new pump and filter, ex-stock so should be here midday on Monday.

Let's just hope that it finally closes the door on this bitch of a saga !!

So...hopefully, good news from me on Monday :)

Beside getting me down hassle wise, it's also having quite an impact on the bank balance :eek: When will it stop I ask myself.

Is the pump you refer to, the one, in my case located behind the rear r.h. wheel arch ? When I switch the ignition on I can hear it running. About 2 months ago I replaced the fuel filter which is sat next to it.

I'll hopefully have the results of the diagnostics late tomorrow morning.
As usual these things always come to light on a Friday when, if parts have to be ordered they don't come until Tuesday or Wednesday because nobody works over the weekend :violent:

This afternoon I thought "Sod it" and got the TD4 engine diagnostic software for my Rovacomlite. pity I didn't get it sooner because I could have run a check on the fuelling system and MAYBE have picked up on any pressure problems.

Life is full of "If only", so I'll put that behind me !!!
Tell you what....this saga has been one hell of a learning curve !!:eek:

YET ANOTHER UPDATE :mad:

The new fuel pump and filter arrived yesterday afternoon and were taken to the garage for fitting.
Just phoned them, the pump is fitted and delivering fuel but.........still won't start :confused::confused:
They are going to plug it into the diagnostics again (The guy who does it has nipped out for a short while) and I have to call them back later.
To recap as to what has been done:
Injectors sent away and refurbished, refitted with new seals after cylinder head seats cleaned up.
New genuine LR low pressure fuel pump and filter fitted.
New gaskets fitted to camshaft cover and inlet manifold.

Initial diagnostic check showed "Insufficient pressure on low pressure side of main injector pump"

Hi John, hope all is well with you back in Blighty. Apart from being down with some virus for 6 weeks, all is good here.
Been looking at Freelanders as the missus has been hankering after one as her own car. From what I've seen, I'd sooner have another P38:)
I used to be a petrol head, but diesels are so simple and generally reliable.
I still think you may have an injector leaking. You could do worse than try a burst of easy start, if it starts it may well continue to run as the injection pressure will be higher with the engine running, you can then look on diagnostics and see what you get.
I know easy start is frowned on, but it's a good dodge on diesels.:)

Hi Keith...Called up the garage tonight and the EML lamp has been reset.
The engine spins over but will not fire. The EML is going out as it should and there are no faults shown on the diagnostics !! Cracked the nut on the fuel feed to no.1 injector, cranked it over and fuel shot out with a good amount of pressure behind it. Going down there tomorrow to swap the Pierburg MAF back to the original Bosch, swap the wiring to the fuel rail sensor back to the original, thereby removing the Synergy out of the system. The Synergy has been on for a few months and has never given any problems but it's down to isolation tactics now. I will get him to give it a dose of Easy Start before we swap it over.
If all that fails, I think it's down to sending the injectors back for checking as it did start and run , albeit lumpy at first when I installed them after their refurb. They come with a 12 months warranty.

I know some people rave on about theses gizmo's to put on your car like the maf and so on but I have only tried one once ,it was like rover Ron's box but I found the only thing it did was to give the engine more fuel and in turn with all the fuel I found I was getting through turbo hoses ,so for me it is standard ,and my car does not give me much trouble
 
Morning Guys....
Had a call from the garage this morning to say that they decided to try and start the car with a tow and it started but is running rough and throwing heavy smoke out of the exhaust. The EML is still working as it should and it would restart off the key.
I decided to go over and pick it up and bring it back here as the people who did the injectors want to check them over under warranty. Anyway, went to the garage which is approx.3 miles away, started the car and drove it home. They were right-it was running rough, like a misfire and throwing loads of smoke out of the back all the way home. It cut out once on the way, the EML stayed on and it wouldn't start. Luckily I was on a hill and managed to bump start it, the EML went out and managed to limp home. I have now taken the injectors out and they are boxed up ready to be picked up-they should be back to me on Friday hopefully. In the meantime I am going to swap everything back to the way it was, i.e. disconnect the Synergy and put the original Bosch MAF in.
Will update as things progress.
 
It's nothing to do with the MAF ! They do have a big effect on performance but not to your extent :eek:

What are you calling the "EML" ?? The Mill light ? i.e the engine warning light , if so this has been lit up on my wifes TD4 for the last 3 years (don't know why, just keeps coming back on every time we wipe it !!) and it runs sweet as :)

I presume that your "synergy" jobby is a plug in black box booster thing ?? That would be the first thing that I would have got rid of.

Like I said before you have done so much stuff to it in one go it's difficult to back track.

I once got a re-con kit for a weber carb that was running fine before on a 2.5 petrol 110, bastid would'nt start afterwards, I had that carb in bit's about 20 times checking/cleaning etc because as far as I was concerned it must have been the carb as it was running before hand. Turns out a divorce later that the condensor had gone !!! :rolleyes: Know what I mean ;)
