First of all, Hi everyone I'm new to this forum
I've bought my 04 manual Freelander a few weeks ago. It was fairly cheap due to ticking noise coming from the engine.
It runs and sounds fine at idle but from 1500-3500rpm its make ticking noise (like tappets). The ticking speeds up with the rpm but it stops immediately at 3500 rmp when the throttle fully pressed in (realised on german motorway :) ). If i start to release the pedal (to like halfway) above 3500rmp the ticking comes back.
Also the engine hesitates a bit when the throttle just a 1-2 cms in. If I push it further it pulls fine.
Power in general looks okay.
I've found a receipt for injectors (dont know if replaced or inspected or what) from 2018 for 160 quid. I believe its not the price for 4 injectors.
Anyone got any idea what can it be?
Why the ticking stops at high rpm?
What I'm thinking about is the injectors bad or maybe an exhaust manifold leak?
Thanks in advance and sorry for bad English.

Check the crankshaft damper, and while there, make sure the crankshaft is complete and not broken. It's not unheard of for the crankshaft to break, just where it drives the timing chain.

Pardon the intrusion but just for my own reference... can the car run with a broken crankshaft?
Thanks

The TD4 crankshaft normally breaks it the front crank web, so can continue to run for some time, as the broken section is only driving the front loads, like the timing chain, alternator, PS pump, and AC compressor.

Crankshaft failure not common by any means, but it does happen on this engine and the normal symptom is a ticking noise. The camshaft/valve assembly is very reliable, and isn't normally susceptible to wear or noise.

The crank shaft damper is (I believe) the main pulley on the end of the crank driving the aux belt(s). The rubber delaminates and the suggested method for testing is to shine a torch on it and check for metallic particles in the air around it.

When you say the engine "hesitates" at 1-2cms of throttle, there is a lot of talk on the forum and threads about hesitation at 2,000rpm. Not sure if it has ever been resolved. I think there was some thought that it may be related to/made worse by removing the EGR.

The car done 4k miles in the past few weeks with no problems. Also i think crankshaft would make noise on low (idle-1500) and high (3500-) rpms as well isnt it?
Thanks for the comment, I'll check the damper soon.

70's band sang a song about this....
It started with a tick.... Never thought it would come to this.

Think it was Hot Chocolate!!

Now you have an age profile!!!!

Thanks for you comment,
It hesitates on lower rpms if I remember well. But im sure it does at 1500.
I've cleaned the EGR, its still functioning.
