TD4 tale of woe...

this is a familiar tale, the one where the hero, my TD4, has all his superpowers removed in much the same manner as kryptonite effects the 'man of steel'. Yes, it's at 70mph, and yes, it's at approx 3000rpm. (Wake up at the back there,) So, you all know the story so all I'm going to do is list the stuff I've done to remove the problem.

EGR blanked - new silicone hoses - BMW cyclone filter thingy - turbo solenoid switch - the filter that hangs down the back of the engine, changed - new MAF and ronbox 2a fitted - under bonnet fuel pump changed - in tank fuel pump changed - full service including filters - fuel lines flushed with TEC 4 which is, apparently, where to old Forte guys now work their magic.

This about covers everything I've been advised to do and it's made no difference whatsoever, so, Gentlemen and Ladies, I throw myself upon your tender ministrations!

I am currently having the same problem (lots of these popping up at the moment - bad batch of diesel?) But I think it's better now.

Things I did that you haven't done:

1. Check turbo vane mechanism actually works by watching it through the driver's wheelarch while someone else revs the engine. It should move about 20mm.

Remove air filter box and intake plenum and:

2. Inspect all vacuum lines - one of mine was rubbed through.
3. Unplug and clean connectors for MAF, MAP, fuel rail pressure sensor, sensor on HP pump, crank sensor, cam sensor, coolant temp sensor - everything you can see.
4. Remove and inspect fuel rail pressure sensor.
5. Remove starter and remove sensor on HP pump - two Torx bits. There is a microfilter on the end which is worth a blowout.

6. Consider having your injectors serviced.

Hello, M.A.P sensor, left hand side of engine near the front. Easiest to take the manifold off to replace it as it's bolted to it. Max an hour to replace, should cost about £30 to buy it. Sorted mine when I had this problem. Best of luck to you. Mike

Wow, that was quick! OK, lots to work through there. There's no smoke or leaking hoses as they've all been replaced. I've had them go before, so I know what to look for there. I'll start on the list and report back. Thanks a lot, guys!

What year is the TD4, no one on here seems to put what year or if under bonnet pump or wheel arch pump, very frustrating at times

Agreed! Half of the first page of posts is usually taken up with: What year/engine/trim/mileage?

How feasible would a template post be, with sections to fill in these useful details? Mods?

If you check my first post you'll notice I referred to the 'under bonnet pump' frustrating when posts don't get read 'ain't it!

Revs fine standing in neutral, redline - tick over - redline as many times as you like. It's getting plugged into the mothership tomorrow, so more to report hopefully!

Yes sorry I must have missed that, I blame this man flu, if you were closer I could have connected up to the T4 or the Hawkeye, but as above check the( MAP ) turbo boost pressure sensor, it most likely is blocked as in the pics below, also check the EGR solenoid hoses I found mine had rubbed on the coolant pipe and was holed, then have a quick check on the EGR valve hoses, last but no least wich MAF have you fitted genuine Bosch or a Pierburg if the later the ronbox 2a should be set at 6-10, personally I would not run a synergy as in the long run they damage the HPFP we have seen this time and time again on the R40 forums, if you have the Bosch maf fitted try unplugging the synergy.

Morning,

I've got the Pierburg and fitted it along with the ronbox. The MAP is next in line for a look see, but in an hour I'm plugging in the snap on equivalent of the mothership. Hopefully, it'll come up with an error code that I can actually deal with. I'll report back with the results!

OK, guys, time for an update. Did the diagnostic thing with with various plug in devices and a smoke generator, when the smoke came on I was waiting for the strobes and a crashing noise that introduced King Crimson, and, after a degree of head scratching and a bit of lever jiggling, the final verdict that the turbo was deceased! There was nothing else it could be really, everything else has been changed.

Next week the surgeon performs major surgery, so I'll report when the patient comes out of intensive care!

Well, time for an update, I think. I left my TD4 with a local garage last Tuesday as requested for them to perform the required surgery. Since then, I've been fed a diet of excuses, misinformation and downright bulldroppings on the occasions that they can be bothered to answer the phone.

When I left it, it ran like a Swiss watch - up to the 55-60mph when the turbo failed! Now, if I'm being told the truth, it runs like a disease ridden ship of the desert who has failed to find a functioning wadi for weeks! The worrying thing is, the spanner twiddlers have no idea why! What I want to do is tell them to put it back together exactly as it was when I left it and let me take it to somebody who does know what they're doing. At this stage, however, this probably ain't gonna happen!

So, having spent the entire week at home waiting, I'm disabled and can't get out without wheels, I'm now at the mercy of the comedy department of the motor industry waiting for the one with the rubber flower in his hat to work out which end of the screwdriver to hold!

I'll do another update when the news is better but, in the words of Captain Oates, I may be some time...

Is it possible you had a dodgy injector and replacing the turbo killed completely? either that or they disturbed the loom while replacing the turbo. Either way it sounds like you need a proper diesel mechanic to look at it.

That's pretty much my opinion, today's idea is to get it collected and taken to a proper diesel engineer! I'll let you know...
