En route north yesterday on the M90 the TD4 died very abruptly, engine management light came on and I luckily managed to drift into a layby. A complete non- starter, so the recovery guy plugged in the code reader and it initially came up with a generic catalytic converter/lambda fault. It was taken away and they now think it is probably a fuel delivery problem, possibly high pressure pump. It is being checked today by a diesel specialist.

Is the high pressure pump the one in the rear wheel arch, or is there a higher pressure pump in the tank or somewhere else? It is a 2003 plate and I have already replaced the wheelarch pump last year (though it was an ebay purchase and I wasn't convinced it was 'new').

catalytic convertor/lambda fault is a red herring, won't stop the engine from running, more likely to be a moody reading as the engine died.

the pump you have changed in the wheel arch is a low pressure or lift pump. there is another high pressure injection pump in the engine bay.

hi there mine went same thing driving a long then nothing .pump in tank guy at garage said usely one next to fuel filter the lifter pump . but mine wos sender pump in tank 340 pounds from landy stealer ship plus fitting 60 more pounds . sender wos a lot cheaper but just my luck good look might be needing it

To BDD...assuming that you live somewhere near Fife.... get Mike Aitken to look at it (He is in Ladybank), he is a Land rover specialist and is top notch with the marque

Thanks guys - stay in East Lothian and was on way to Dunkeld:mad:
Recovery have taken it to Paterson Diesel in Cowdenbeath, so outa my hands at the moment. Didn't have much option as free recovery only covers 10 miles and I needed to get north VERY urgently - otherwise would have looked around for a good specialist if i'd had more time. Hope it is something like the low pressure pump, fairly easy and cheaper to replace than the in-tank or, god forbid the high pressure injector pump...:(

I have heard good reports of Paterson Diesel so hopefully they will be able to fix without major expense:)

If you have the driver rear wheel arch pump then the only other pump you will have is the main mechanical injector pump at the engine, earlier models had an in tank pump then another electrical pump in the engine bay + the main mechanical injector pump.

Word back is injector no 1 needed repaired and has now been done. Pick up this afternoon.
Not sure what exactly went but should find out. One of the injectors failed last year and the symptom was just poor running, and not outright breakdown. I thought the engine would still run on 3 injectors?
