Hi All,

Looking to get my new (to me) TD4 (2002) remapped, give a bit more go. I've searched the forum(s) and several companies keep coming up, one being dynachip, now I've spoken to the chap there I'm pretty sure I'll get him to do the work after payday but just wanted to ask the experts - any experience, what should I expect in terms of extra go, quicker acceleration, drive-ability and so on.

Mr Dynachip (ok, probably not his name) said it makes a massive difference to the vehicle.

Any one had any subsequent reliability issues or am I just being nervous because I'm a wuss?

I've read lots about the Roveron/synergy 2 box - but thought a remap was the better option. Happy to be wrong as the Synergy is cheaper but is it the best option?

very highly regarded piece of kit, do a search on this forum to see what people say. to my mind, better than a remap as a) completely adjustable b) compensates for MAF c) totally plug and play d) totally reversable.

just my opinion, but if you search this forum, generally well regarded. coupled with an egr bypass is about as good as it gets for the td4 without going crazy

And the Synergy doesn't get "accidently" wiped and remapped back to standard by a dealer service plug-in

Synergy for me, as Opti says it's got the built-in MAF compensator which no remap can help with. only benefit of a GOOD remap is that it can play around with boost pressure & you may get a little more power but Roverrons kit really is top notch.

synergy 2, pierburg maf,egr block off,nuff sed:D

seriously though, do all of the above and you wont be dissapointed, i was thinkin the same "re-map" or "synergy", but there is just so many more benefits to the roveron synergy, plus its been tried, tested and proved too may times, where as your re-map comes down to who evers performing the re-map as to whether its any good:doh:

Well I fitted a Synergy 2 as advised by you good people. Wow, I truly am amazed.

So much smoother, faster, more umph from lower revs - all good stuff, I have it at max setting right now but will turn it down a bit for regular use.

Surprised and impressed. Thinking about changing the MAF and doing the EGR mod now...

Thank you!

Leave it at max & let your right foot be your adjustment for regular use.

Glad you're happy with it, it really is a good wee unit.

Loads of chat on the net about VOSA proposed changes to the MOT test by 2012 to include .......

[ Other items – such as headlamp bulb and unit incompatibility, headlamp levelling devices and illegal engine ‘chipping’ – will need further thought before we can get a workable solution for MOT stations.
Some of the new items may require extra effort on the part of the tester – when we know for sure what that is we’ll be talking again with our trade and DfT colleagues to work out what the impact will be. ]

[ 6.1.9 Engine performance:
(a) Control unit illegal modified.
(b) Illegal engine modification. ]

Obviously they are some way from finding a method for detecting remaps but I guess this info makes a stronger case for removable tuning modules.

How can it be illegal? Is it to do with the type approval being changed by making a change? If so using anything not OE would/could come under this.

They'd have to work hard to find where my Synergy2 has been hidden!

it would seem that the UK is catching up with us here, not allowed any modifications at all here - if it is not on the original homologation sheet it is not allowed - even down to tyre size has to be the same as when it left factory

Interesting, so if you modify a car, say as a boy racer with a big bore exhaust, declare it to your insurance company and still passes the current MOT for noise/emission etc. it could still become illegal because the car has changed from the factory spec.

Suddenly many tyre companies, exhaust companies, tow bar companies, companies that make lids for pick up trucks etc. will go bust. Too much tax revenue for a UK government to allow it to pass!

even the tow bar has to be an official Land Rover one, anything within microcat for LR fitment is allowed but no after market items. Not to say that it is not done down here is incorrect , all test stations are government run but they are staffed by non mechanics, so if you have a family member that works there a blind eye is turned!! Only time that this can come unstuck is if stopped by the GNR and have to produce documents as everything is listed on that + they have roadside access to the homoloogation sheets

'How can it be illegal?'
It will be illegal once a regulation has been drawn up to say it's not permitted.

I think you would have to remove a synergy or similar for the test, they're not daft you know, all they need to do is look at certain sensor connections for additional wiring.

There was talk of diesel emission control tuning via ecu at MOT station on next generation diesels in professional mechanic a few months back

It appears from the initial proposal that it will include such an obvious modification. There would be less chance of the tester finding a disabled standard valve and in any case if the valve is still there it could be enabled again for the test.
I understand you views on emissions but if you think about it as vehicles get older there'll be less and less vehicles without EGR because from about euro 4 spec vehicles onward you can't bypass or disable without flagging up a malfunction.
