Hi all - im a newbie!

I've owned a 52plate TD4 SE 5 door for approx 2 years now and never had a problem. Its now done 83,000 and was serviced 9 months ago. I shoot a lot so it does a fair amount 'off-roading' and does only the school run every day.

Today i've driven it to reading (around 55 miles) and when driving it back it started to (what i would call) stutter when i was accelerating - and when i really put my foot down it just rev'd quite high and wouldn't go up the gear. Then when i got nearer to hoime it stuttered quite a lot and the the engine justs stopped. The lights stayed on and the engine just spun over when i tried to re-start.

There is 3/4 tank of fuel in it (£40's worth i put in today) and it was diesel! Tried to turn it over a few times after it has been towed home - and after five times the batt's now drained:doh:

The only other thing to report is that i bump'd (quite hard) a ramp in the road in one of the villages near Wallingford on the front passenger side - but nothing that hasn't been done before when the missus has been using it!!!

Please help if you can - AA will be coming out tomorrow to have a look -

Tom

It's approaching the age that the low pressure fuel pumps fail. I'm sure the AA will be able to confirm if that is the case.

Chaser,

Thanks for the heads up. I actualy had a mechanic in the car with me (who's been out of the industry for 12 years) who said on listening to the engine turn over it didn't sound like it was laboured (i.e it hadn't fuel running through it to labour the engine cycle??) So could be a fuel pressure problem

Never had a prob ever before with it though and there's been no gradual drop in performance at all - just the distance home today!??

Just got my Td4 back from the garage, hadn't been impressed with the pull away for a while but on the last run it stuttered and was very flat. Reminded me of fuel starvation on a carb based petrol engine.
The Landy dealer ran diags and found low output from the HP fuel pump, replaced it and now realise how bad it was.

Could be a dodgy connector to one the fuel pressure sensors. Go through them one by one taking them off and on a few times. They do get a bit corroded.

Nickjb,

Can you tell me roughly where they are?!

To update:

AA man turned up at 9 this morning and plugged in the power to charge the batt, turned it over and said something was wrong with the diesel pump. Took back Drivers side wheel off, took off casing and earth wire was off the body-completely corroded off. He re-attached by a bolt, and the old girl started after a few taps on the pump. Ran and idled perfectly, he then put all the car back to together. I took it for a test drive and it stopped showing same symptoms again. He came along the road -and said straight away diesel pumps shot - (what he actually said was 'if l had to tap it to free it - it'll be shot - replace that and the filter and it'll be good as new') Spoke to Kings Langley Land Rover and they have told me (AA man did too) how to change it and they've quoted me £178 + VAT - 5% !! They are £120 on ebay and £10 for a fuel filter! - awaiting another supplier to call back.....

Gents,

To update - I've replaced the fuel pump at the back and the filter myself, then changed the air filter too. Took about an hour - works perfectly now (touching wood as i say this) only thing thats started happoening now is that it'll lock on the fob, but refuses to unlock on the fob!!!!!

Was working fine before i disconnected the batt -

Hey ho!

Take the cover off the fob, the micro switch's have a nasty habit of breaking off.

Happened on the the disco prior to selling it, took it to a stealer just to see what they said - was just before closing time and they wanted to book it in but we said that we were busy so they went into the back room and got a guy who loves his discos, took the cover off the fob sure enough micro switch broken off, placed it on the contacts, pressed it and sure enough it worked, glued it in position with some superglue and put it in a new case, job done. They even let us have the new case for free. :)

They can be soldered, but it's very tricky, even the stealers glue them in position, thats only after trying to flog you a new fob, we were lucky because they had a guy that knew that it was a common thing and it was worth a try. Loctite superglue ultra gel, that the stuff they used, it held ours in position for 3 months and I presume it's still on the go.

If its not the micro switch it could be out of sync, battery out of remote, press each button on the fob for 5 seconds, battery in, press the lock button repeatedly until it locks, then it should be resync'ed and unlock.

Did you synchronise the fob with the car ?? You can do this by holding the fob towards the dashboard and pressing quickly for 5-6 times either of the two knobs until the small red light in the dash starts flickering. Good luck.

Sorry, see this was already suggested in previous post's last paragraph.

Guys,

All sorted - took the fob apart and the rubber contact and retainer had come away and was loose in the housing - put it all back together and now works perfect!

Just need to:

- Change the rear diff mounts
- Sort the wiper problem (i think the relay is fooked)
- Change the oil
- Buy some 15" Wheels & mud tyres
- Buy tax

!
