Hi,

Ive done a bit of searching through the forum and net in general and have found different recommendations for the types of oil to use including the oil used by farmers in farm machinery.

I realise that there will always be different opinions but what Im really trying to find is generally speaking what is regarded as being the best oil when doing a fluids change on a 104k mile 2003 TD4 Manual.

Engine ?
Gearbox ?
IRD ?

Also, is there any other oils to change?

For engine Oil there is something that can help save you some money! Look at the oil containers for ACEA A3 and ACEA B3, as long as it has those its fine for the TD4 engine.
Basically oil manufacturers will blend a base oil with additives so that it will pass a certain specification. The oil companies are VERY good at blending an oil to just pass the test. Basically its the additives that are the expensive part of the blend so the less they add the more profit for them! So ignore the brand and look at the specs.
I used to test the blends that oil companies would offer to the MoD against the MoD specs and they virtually always just passed. So look for the specs on the bottle not the flashy brand.

Good advice - that is how I buy mine, rather than stick to the fancy 'expensive' brands
