Td4..non starter

Tried junping it a few times .....no go.

I presume i need a new starter then?

Where's the best place to source one from?

not sure if this helps, but when my battery was totally dead, where the dash lights barely came on, the car wouldn't jump start either, even when i was trying to jump it from a 100Ah battery in another offroad.

Once i got a new bat, all was fine again.

Exactly, if the batteries cells are shorted it won't jump start unless you disconnect the dud battery.

Everything lights up as normal with or without jump leads connected.

All i get is the clicking and no turning over, you can even feel it through the gear stick(auto)

Do you get one single solid click when you turn the key or do you get repeated clicking when you hold the key in the crank position?

Not looking like starter then. poor connection or battery. read Vic's post. get battery tested.

Ohms law Volts = Current x Resistance. This also applies to Volt drop across a Resistance. If your starter motor draws 100 amps and you have a bad connection of only 0.1 ohm, then volt drop =100 x 0.1 which is 10 volts. As you only have 12 volts in a battery,loosing 10 volts only leaves 2 volts, not enough to hold the soleniod in. The 1st click is the solenoid going in, you drop 10 volts and the solenoid drops out (2nd click) you are no longer drawing any current so the voltage rises to 12 and pulls in the solenoid (3rd click) this causes the volt drop again and the solenoid drops out (4th click) and so on. If the battery is shot it doesn't need a bad joint to cause this, it just can't deliver enough current so its voltage drops across its internal resistance.

Ok...I'll go out and buy a new battery this morning and see if it works.

Before i go and spend £100 notes on a battery i tried to jump it. I diconnected both battery cables and hooked it up to my merc via jump leads and still the same. Just a constant clicking when holding in the start position.

The mercs battery is a 950cca so its more than enough to start the freebie

When hooked up all the other electrics (radio, blower etc) worked fine.

Ok now you getting somewhere. This leaves the other ends of the battery cables ie. the earth to the engine and the positive to the alternator and on to the starter. If you are absolutely certain these connections are perfect then you will need to remove the starter and test directly with jump leads onto the terminals.

I've removed and cleaned the positive to the starter, lucar connector and the earth from the battery to the inner wing. Haven't done the altermator one.

I'll remove the starter and test with jump leads, what do i connect to where?

While you have the battery disconnected why not remove and check the connection on the alternator to rule it out. I seem to remember Optimus having some issue with a bad connection there some time back.

I've got the starter out, what now?

I'll clean the positive on the alternator aswell

use jump leads, earth to starter flange, live/pos to terminal post, then connect a piece of wire to the lucar and touch the other end to the live jump lead and the solenoid will throw in and the starter should turn. Keep you foot on it to steady it.

Yep, starter sprung forward and was spinning.

So i presume the starter is good then. At least the problem is being narrowed down.

So must be a connection issue somewhere when fitted to the car the car.

Refit but this time try the starter with a wire from lucar to battery pos. instead of normal connection. It should work the same as it did on the floor.

Starter back in, went from + terminal on the battery to the lucar connection on the
starter. It made a noise similiar to that when it was on the floor.

I'd be looking at the earth strap - and all cables
