Hi all, this is my first post here having recently found this site. I wish I had found this site before as I have owned a Freelander for over seven years and you guys could probably saved me a fortune. Anyway the problem I have is this. I have just purchased an 04 plate TD4. It drives lovely for the first 20 - 30 minutes and then if I stop at a junction and go to pull away there is no power at all, only a bit of quick clutch action averts it stalling on me. A good hefty dose of throttle is the only way to get it moving, once moving it seems fine until the next junction. I have had a MAF go on my previous freelander but this seems totally different. It is very disconcerting sitting at a junction wondering if you can pull away, espeacially if it's on a busy road. Whats worse I usually tow a caravan and the thought of trying to pull away with an extra ton and a quarter on the back is of great concern. So over to you, please help as it's driving me mad.

Hi there and welcome.

I am quite new hear and to the world of Freelanders but I am the owner of a TD4 commercial 04 plate.

Only had 12k on it when I bought it but I noticed a slight hesitation on it when for instance coming to a roundabout, slowing diown, going into 2nd or 3rd and then trying to pull away. There seemed to complete lack of power for a couple of seconds.

After searching through here I found that amongst other things it could be the MAF sensor as you mentioned. So first port of call would be to disconnect it (under the airbox cover, directly behind the oil filler cap. There are a few pics on other threads. Once disconnected it will put the engine into a fail safe mode that will actually improve this hesitation. If this happens it is the MAF sensor. You can leave it disconnected for a while to you get one fitted, but make sure its a genuine one.

You can also check that the EGR valve is clean and then maybe disconnect the EGR pipe (the small bore one at the left of it) and see if that improves it.

Then, get a roverron Synergy tuning box (www.tuning-diesels.co.uk) for £180 to give it a bit more welly. Also has the advantage of been able to use peirburg MAFS if you require later on which are half the price of the LR/Bosch ones.

After getting our new freelander I stalled it a few times trying to move off from roundabout, junctions etc, to put this into context I have never stalled my BMW E46 320d in the 4 odd years I owned it !!

After reading your post our car displays all the same symtoms.

We had the car back to the dealer yesterday on Diags, nothing showed up, despite this I pulled the MAF plug last night and things immediately felt crisper in throttle response, especially when pulling away, cant say I noticed an overall power increase tho, just crisper response.

Spoke to dealer today again, he said run it for a couple of weeks and see how things go with the plug pulled, monitor the fuel economy etc, which has been low 30's at best with sedate driving ! All else fails he will replace under warranty if needed, sounds like a result to me.

Car had the full service only a few weeks back, looking at doing the crankcase breather ASAP as well as the EGR mod shortly afterwards.

That's what annoys me about the dealers. They know that it's faulty & for a real result should have replaced it under warranty immediately. Hopefully you'll get sorted soon.
