My 2005 TD4 HSE is currently only giving about 30 - 32 MPG, when we first brought the car it was nearer 40. With Diesel prices approaching £5 a gallon :mad::eek: this decrease is anoying, I always thought that when a enging wears in it gives better MPG.

What are fellow members getting?
Is it worth buying one of "Rons" boxes will this improve MPG?

Your comments would be appreciated.
 
Thats still loads better than what the 2.5 litre petrol gives. I'm lucky if I can get 19mpg.
The engine isn't the only thing that effects mpg. Under inflated tyres for instance can cause drag which leads to increased fuel consumption.
What sort of mileage have you put on the car since purchasing it?
 
Now done about 16K used on daily runs of about 60 mile constant driving.

Tyres are inflated to 32psi all around.

We have noticed fuel burning heater seems to be on a lot and stays on after vehicle is turned off for a few minutes.
 
Maybe you've answered your question yourself. If the fuel burning heater is faulty it may be burning more fuel than is needed and for longer than is needed.
Tyre preasures seem about right, I run at 30psi.
 
I always float around 31-32 mpg, but it's a Steptronic and mainly driven around the "block". (And it is chipped, not having a Ron box, but is similar).
 
helloooooo, the fuel burning heater has a cool down period of 2 minutes after the engine has been swithced off, there is no fuel delivery after engine swithed off, i have heard of complaints of 28-30mpg with no relavant fault codes or running issues, might be worth a visit to your local dealer for a fault code read on your engine management, posible air flow meter fault
 
Hi Slodge got a TD4 with auto box and bin chipped ,on a run or motorway get tween 35-40 bout town drops to bout 32 always been the same ,have never noticed the fuel burner [don't even know if its working] come to think of it don't know what it is for ,maybe somebody could tell me. . .. :)
 
mine is about early 30's on an autobox - probably doesnt help with the amount of water I am carrying around from the leaky roof-rails.
 
your td4 might not have one they made it an optional extra for a certain period, look under your front bumper below the nsf headlamp side you will see a little exhaust poking out, it is used to heat your coolant up quicker on cold mornings :)

Exactemento.

(As I've said already several times and on several forums two complaints from me re the Hippo, these are: 1. the heating (in winter time) and 2. the airco (in summer time)......and part of 1. that FBH, it's no good if driving short trips and parking the car in a garage afterwards (if the cycle stops in the garage it fumes and stinks etc.....)

Hi Ming,

No spell checker at all here, forget that. LR GUY was correct all the way, the FBH is indeed 'supposed' to be used to heat up the coolant much quicker. My 'supposed' is just an ironic way that the word 'used' is to be taken under very high reserves. (What I mean is that in my opinion the FBH is not such a big help at all, doing short trips it's no good for the reason i gave already, and on longer trips it doesn't matter whether it takes a couple of minutes more before the coolant is at temperature, so ..... but on my car it was standard with the edition I got (SE) so no special order from me).
 
you probably wont need to look you would know if you had one, the stupid noise they make and the smoke which bellows out from the bumper area, so if your not getting those 2 you probably have not got one,

or it could just be that it does not work but that cant be right, freelanders dont break do they ?

Red:

Not only the smoke, also the bad smell when it cycles down while it is put in the garage already. My wife alwaus puts the laundry to dry in the garage in wintertime, so when I come home from a short trip .......:mad: :mad:
