The horn on my 2002 TD4 has given up the ghost. Checked the fuses and they are all OK.

Are there any obvious checks I can carry out to get to the bottom of the problem? What is the easiest way of checking the horn itself?

maybe down to the circular contacts in the steering wheel, referred to as "clockspring" in the manuals. maybe worth a check.

you could also put a multimeter on the terminals on the back of the horn and have an assistant press the button. if the voltage changes from 0 to 12 then the horns are at fault. As an aside, many freelanders have the twin tone arrangement, which is two horns, one high one low which operate together. It would be unlucky for them both to fail together, so would be looking more at other causes.

sorry to thread jump lads:D, but this is a problem that Ive had a few times in the last week or so, horn wouldnt work to start with and then it would after a few pushes of the button:doh:, but i just put it down to the cold weather or a dirty contact etc., and was planning to look into it at the weekend.

but that last comment has got me intrested now "changed your audio system lately", because this is something i did a few weeks back, along with the adaptor lead for the stalk control, are they conected in some way then??????

yes the clock spring or rotory coupler goes through the radio just tried to change my stanard radio cassete in my 02 td4 comercial used the wirering harness so i did nt have to cut wires new cd player worked all fine but the horn did not work replaced old radio and horn worked.do you have stalk controls

now this is intresting mate, Ive got an '02 td4 now, and Ive had a couple over the years, and ive also changed the stereo in all of them but never come across this problem till now:confused:

why would the clock spring go through the radio, i dont get it:confused::confused:

Can't work this one out either??
Rotary coupler 1+2 are Radio control loop (no earth)
3+4 are Horn circuit - +12v from horn relay via horn push to earth header.
5+6 used for CC - SET + RES when fitted. (no earth)
Unless they routed the earth back to the header via one of the audio connectors I don't see it either? (don't always believe the diagrams - I found quite a few wires in my '06 TD4 that just ain't like the diagram shows!)
Intermittent coupler contacts (3 or 4) could cause the problem ??
Keep us posted - sounds interesting.

i think it is earthed through the radio some how cause when i remove the plug from the rear of my standard radio cassete player the horn dont work plug it back in and all works so its got to be a earth loop on it to the rotary coupler.

resurrecting this thread to ask... does anyone know how you would go about getting your aftermarket stereo to work with the horn again? Fitted a nice apple car play unit to my TD4 the other week and since then the horn hasn't worked on the button (still toots if you leave a door open when trying to lock it). Been through plenty of forums and threads about aftermarket stereos causing the horn to stop working due to an earthing problem with the clock spring, but not yet found an actual concrete solution to this issue.

I've printed off plenty of wiring diagram sheets for all things clock spring, radio, and earth related... But still can't find what wire it actually is behind the dash that I need to earth.

Did you disturb the clock spring when fitting the new HU?
I think this earth thing is a red herring. It's not uncommon for the horn wire inside the clock spring to fail, as it takes more current than the other wires in there.

Haha yeah ik it does sound a bit odd doesn't it, the fact that the stereo would have anything to do with the horn switches... It just seems like a big coincidence that right after I fit the new HU the horn stops working on the wheel, with so many folks saying that it's somehow related. I'm a tight arse so I don't wanna go spending 40-50 quid on a new clock spring if it's not the actual problem.

Swap the horn wire through the clock spring to one of the spare wires reserved for the seldom fitted cruise control. ;)
