Help Guys - looking for somebody who has successfully removed the gear selector linkage from the gearbox

I have everything out / disconnected for a gearbox off job but cant budge the roll pin

I have tried with a short centre punch but access is tough

Can somebody tell me :-

do I attack the beast from the wheel arch side or underneath ?
does it just push out or is there some fancy trick ?
if i just whack it will i break anything on the gear box ?

Any finally - once i get the bugger out and am ready to drop the gear box .... how heavy is it ?? Can i simply drop it off the end of the engine on to my chest (like with the IRD) ?? or does it absolutely need a jack or lifting tackle ??

thanks in advance for your help

You can remove the gearbox with the selector still in place. Its tight, but possible.

You need to lower the engine as far as it will go whilst still on its os mount. Then just twist the gearbox to lower the ird mounting end. It should come out past the wing.

As for the weight. I can lift an IRD unit it, on my own, but i cant lift a Td4 box in or out on my own. I'd get a friend or a trolley jack or something to help :)

Thanks vissie

The ird was heavy but manageable

The box is much bigger but contains a lot of space too - and of course has the additional complication of the drive to the ird

Will try to slide it out onto a pile of timber or something

Lol:) I've successfully removed mine:D
Car high on axle stands, remove clip, apply wd40 or similar, lie under engine/ gearbox from the front, use a parallel pin punch and beat it till your arms don't work! Have a cuppa, then beat it some more! It'll come out.
I can lift it out on my own easily enough, sit in the wheel arch and wiggle it into your lap.
To put it back someone taking the weight from the top makes it easier while you wiggle it on!

Thanks DD

Heard on another thread that the box should come off without removing the "small" part of the selector stuff

Have done normal gearboxes in the past but dont know the weight of this one

Think i will try with the small linkage stuff still attached and drop it off onto lap / knees / what ever

Refitting will be another story maybe

Thanks for your input

DD ; Its the same type of roll pin, but its almost ontop of the gearbox at the back next to the wheel arch. Its a bitch to remove unlike the 1.8k which just takes alot of whacking. The one of the Td4 is designed to be removed by a special tool , which looks alot like a large version of a chain breaker tool.

I still wouldnt recommend removing the gearbox on your own. Its heavy! The 1.8k gearbox is only slightly heavier than an IRD. The Td4 box is probably 1.5x its weight atleast. I know people who can lift them solo, i guess its going to depend on your personal build.

6'3" strapping lad! It's how I do all fwd type boxes, ussually on my own. Must admit to never doing a td4 tho. If the pin only goes one way that's stoopid! Bloody land rover! There's the hydraulic method if its in a sealed hole? ie only open at one end, shove grease thru the little hole in the middle, find a parallel pin punch that only just fits in the hole and give it a good smack. It acts like a piston and the grease shoves the pin out!

you should never try removing a roller pin with a spot punch as it will just open it up futher you need a punch of the same diameter as the roller hope this helps

thanks to everybody for your comments

the situation today is that the clutch has been changed - the old one was totally fooked - burnt to hell - the release bearing also seems burnt and partly melted

so now i have the new disc and pressure plate in place and a bloody heavy gearbox on the floor - far too heavy to lift into place and unfortunately no handy beam in the garage ceiling :(

Lucky i have a friend who owns his own garage business who will lend me an engine hoist to pick the effer up !!!!!!

so the story will continue next week

Also i started taking photos - but in reverse order !!!!!

will post these next week some time
