Hi Guys new to the forums so be gentle,

Need some help identifying a problem. Driving down the motorway yesterday and my car gives up and dies. With the help of some friends in Northwest 4x4 (charity 4x4 response team for emergencies go donate) I was towed off the motorway to look at my car. There seems to be no power getting to the rear fuel pump. We can hear the pump under the bonnet sucking in air but cant hear anything from the rear pump and we can tell the engine is fuel starved. We put a error code reader on and it says there is no fuel pressure.

We know its the Pump but to us it seems there's not enough power getting to the pump. Putting a Multi-meter to the pump we see that when the ignition is on its pulling 6.9V and then there's no other power. This doesn't change when trying to start. We think a relay might have stopped working but i cant find it under the bonnet we also checked the inertia switch. We aren't sure which wires we need to put 12V on in order to test if its the pump or power. Obviously don't want to make it go bang.

If anyone has any experience with this or has any advice it would be much appreciated.

Hello and welcome...
I had 'exactly the same issue' turns out it was the Low Pressure Fuel Pump and Filter (in rear wheel arch n/s)
The rear LP should buzz (cheaper ones can be noisy) so could be a faulty pump...

Td4? The fuel pump relay might be going out. It’s in the engine compartment fusebox. As far as I remember there’s an identical relay nearby that you can swap over to see if things improve.

Thanks for the info i have a fuel filter ready for service so i will swap that out ASAP. The LP filter makes no sound and as mentioned seems to be undervolted or no power at all.

In the engine compartment fuse box, the relay for fuel pump is for the petrol engine and is unpopulated in the diesel model. The fuse for the relay coil is F10 in the engine compartment fuse box but the HP pump is working so i don't think its the fuse. Not sure where the relay coil itself is and ideally don't want to have to follow the wiring where I cant get access to.

i have read the following just now "Fuel pump relay is behind the right front kick panel at passenger right foot well." ill take a look when i get home

lol, most here are Japanese spec, though mines a proper Kiwi car... and a proper diesel to, none of that German tat ;)

Some of the stuff said will be a bit misleading then, cos yours will probably have 2 LP pumps, 1 in tank and other in engine bay, won't have the wheel arch pump/filter.

Proper diesels don't have any lift pumps to go wrong ;)

Well its the German tat i need a hand with and you're right i only have the 2 pumps this much i know.

You'll have 3 pumps, the 2 lift pumps and the injection pump.

Do you have the Rave workshop manual? You can get info on downloading it here....

https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/rave-disk-maintenance-manual.260227/

Be sure you download the later one covering the TD4, not the earlier one covering L Series.

It will have a full description of the fuel pumping mechanism and their electronics.

There are also full circuit diagrams so it will tell you which wires do what on the pump and how it is activated, presumably it is permanently earthed and relay control is on the positive, but stranger things have been found.

If you suspect the relay, presumably this controls both lift pumps so both would be failing the same. If 1 is functioning and the other not, then its not likely to be the relay.

Thanks for your help pal. I do have a copy of the rave disk as of about half an hour ago. I'll take it home with me and have a read through before the tinkering begins I'll update you with any findings.

I believe these things do just tend to be a knackered pump or blocked filter and sometimes the relay. With the pump or filter you often get intermittent issues warning that there's a problem, but not necessarily.

Good luck!
