TD4 Fitting cruise control

Hi everyone, I haven't been on here for a while since I sold my disco. However I've now picked up an old (54) Freelander TD4 Auto Sport and would like to retro fit cruise control. I've read through this post, I have the plug under the drivers seat, so hopefully a loom, what I haven't found yet is the plug for the cruise master switch.

According to the Rave diagrams it should be a blue 5 pin plug, with 2 wires and be behind the little facia panel on the drivers side, but I've had a good look with a torch and mirror up under the dash on the drivers side and can't see a plug. Before I start stripping out the dash and carpets, does anyone have any ideas where this plug maybe hidden? By the way, I've the cruise steering wheel controls and a second hand ECU on the way, just the master switch to get. Many thanks in advance Chris.

hiya

it can be in two places

above the fog light switch on the instrument binnacle or in the centre console

pull out the blank on the left hand side of the instrument panel first to see if its there

if not look in the centre console

hope u dont mind me saying have u popped over to introduce yourself section

see how u get on and shout if u get stuck

Ok ladies and gentlemen, I've had another little look for this cruise control master switch wiring loom and plug, and it's proving elusive. As my freelander sport is a 2004 Mk1 facelift, the plug should be in the osf/ drivers side dash little facia panel. It shows it here in Rave and I've seen them mounted there in similar aged freelanders with cruise.

Logically, you would assume that the plug and loom would be relatively close to this position. But I've looked all around that area, short of removing the dash, I've removed the instrument binnacle and instrument pod, removed the cup holder in the top centre of the dash and checked behind fog light switches etc and popped out the surround around the auto gear lever and looked inside. I removed the drivers side front, side kick panel and did find a spare plug under the carpet below the accelerator pedal, but it doesn't match the size and configuration on Rave.

So my first question is, my copy of Rave shows only Left Hand Drive wiring diagrams, so am I looking for the wrong colour/size connector? If so could the spare connector in the above picture be the one?
Question 2, I haven't yet removed the entire centre console and CD changer/radio, but is it really likely to be in there, a long way from the correct switch position?
Here is a picture of the plug under my drivers seat which I'm hoping is actually the plug for the cruise ecu/relay.

hi mate

first look in your owners manual and see where its fitted , as it may have come out of the blank and dropped down , so by locating it in ur owners manual first will show u the correct positioning

the plug looks the correct one for ur ecu

did u say youve got the steering wheel controls

the wires should be behind a blank, have enclosed a picture of where mines fitted, its a 2002 model so a pre facelift model

for some reason some people have reported the wires not being there with facelift models

however they didn't find the plug under the seat,

when i started looking into this i delved in with great detail there are a few different wiring looms and some dont include the options to plug extras in there, but this only seems to happen with facelift models

some had extra plug in wiring looms

have a look behind every blank in the car and as youve got the one under the seat should be there

the plug in the footwell could be for power-fold mirrors

see how u get on and if the pic may help u in any way

plus make sure u get a second hand ecu as it will then be plug and play and no need to plug it i to testbook etc as with a second hand one the system with recognise it straight away

plus this is what it looks like with the dashboard out

had to change the heater matrix and u shouldnt have to remove it unless its taped up somewhere stupid or tucked away at the back of the centre console

Hi Stuart, thanks for the quick reply. Being a facelift car, my switch will definitely be in a different position to yours. It should be here, you can see with the little facia panel removed, the mounting panel for the switch, unfortunately no plug.

Any idea's on the Rave diagrams only showing LHD? It's interesting to see that the plug on your switch is white, which is what my LHD Rave says that it should be for a 2002 car. So maybe I am looking for a blue one.

My steering wheel controls haven't arrived yet, so I'm yet to remove the steering wheel and find out whether that loom is there or not.

Ultimately, if the Rave diagrams are correct, the main switch only supplies a fused power feed to the ecu, so I could sort that out if I can't find this elusive plug. Cheers Chris.
 
Hi again, I did have the fuse box down last week, sorting out a fault with my interior lights, I don't remember seeing a spare plug, however at that time I wasn't really looking for one. Time to drop that out again tomorrow, definitely a more logical place to find it, in my mind. Chris.

just trying to help u all i can , as i know when i first looked i to it land rover said it was i possible to retrofit and was like putting a red flag to a bull and wished to investigate this myself and even after fitting g it, took it down there and then said i needed a testbook,

they were a bit upset when they realised i got a second hand ecu so was already activated

sorry gassing as per usual, lol

i wonder if its buried under ur carpet, trying to think of it logically, that when the specs are required on a certain vehicle and the factory isnt going to fit cc ,

as youve got the loom under the seat for the ecu , i wonder if they simply tuck the wire out of the way for the master switch, also there will be wiring going up to your steering wheel

on mine , behind the air bag is a small green plug which accepts the ice radio controls and cc paddle controls .

will have a dig through some of my old bits and not promising anything but see if it tells me where some of the wires may be hidden , or taped out of the way

or indeed if it needs an extra section of loom plugging in somewhere , but cant imagine that happening

could it be hidden in the centre console wrapped up and tied off

would u be so kind to list out what you've done so far and where youve looked please as we then may be able to come from two different directions and not covering the same ground in trying to find it

maybe someone with a facelift as retrofitted cc and may have had the same problem in trying to locate the on , off switch wiring

hopefully may be able to crack this and get it up and running

plus got me thinking

i wonder if the facelift models do something like a switch pack, that plugs into the drivers side fusebox, thus provides a small wiring loom to the master switch and the rest of the wiring is already there

could do it as an option in the factory between the base models and the hse

just trying to think out of the box and just a thought

sorry cant be any more help but have gone through all my bits i had and as its a facelift model the wiring is different

idea is if u look on a rave parts list and see what wiring looms are fitted and if theres any difference, it will have the part number on ur loom , most properly in the centre console

Hi Gary, (sorry I called you Stuart in a previous post) you really did go above and beyond the call of duty on Friday night/ Saturday morning, I noticed your last post at 04.50 am Saturday morning.

So here's where we're at, yesterday the steering wheel controls and C/C ecu (with bracket) turned up and were fairly easy to fit. The wiring was inside the steering wheel and all the plugs matched up.

The bad news is that I still haven't located this pesky plug for the CC master switch. Despite having removed the centre console, stereo, fuse box and ccu, mirror switch etc, etc.

I was interested to see in the link that you sent me to another member( myotherworld) was this picture of the master switch.

This pic shows a blue plug with 4 wires attached, now according to Rave there are only 2 wires attached to this plug. This makes me question the Rave diagrams, they do seem to be LHD, so you would assume that they're different to RHD versions?
I have to say that my LHD rave diagrams appear to be correct in most aspects i.e looking at the cruise diagram the wire colours, connectors and connector pin numbers all tie up on my car for the back of the fuse box, the rotary coupler, the CC ecu.

Another thing I noticed on the above pic is that the loom appears to have a label attached, this says to me that it could be an additional small bit of loom for CC which then plugs into the main harness somewhere. I'd love to know the part number written on that label and find out if it's a separate mini loom or not and if so where it plugs into the other end.

On the MG Rover sites they state that the Rover 75 has a separate mini loom for the CC and I noticed that a lot of the Rover part numbers, connector numbers etc correspond with the Land Rover ones.( I did search for the Rover Loom part no. but didn't find anything.

I have a couple of cruise control questions for other Mk1 Facelift Freelander owners so I'm going to put them in a separate post, as this is getting like War and Peace.

Hi, I'm trying to retro fit cruise control to my Mk 1 Facelift 2004 (54) Freelander TD4 Auto Sport. As per my previous posts, I've fitted the CC ecu and steering wheel controls, what I'm stuck on is the master switch wiring.

What I'd love to know from anyone on here who owns a Mk1 Facelift Auto Td4, particularly the Sport Model is :

If you haven't got Cruise Control, is the blue plug for the master switch behind the little dash facia panel to the right hand side of the steering column (Just above the fuse box cupboard)?
If the plug is there, is there a white label with a part number on it and if possible could you follow the loom back and see where it plugs in or which harness it comes out of. Also how many wires go into the blue plug?
I suspect HSE spec cars are more likely to have this, but I'd like to know about the lower spec cars too.

Anyone that has Cruise control fitted, could you take a peek behind the master switch and again let me know how many wires are in the plug and if there's a part number label on that bit of wiring loom.

maybe if u start a new thread out of this one for facelift owners, so its not hidden in here

have u got ur master switch yet , i noticed in ur pic there is a blue plug which i assume goes i to a blank in the centre console

thats not the master cc plug is it, the reason i ask is maybe the wire is tucked away somewhere and not where u expect it to be , if u have the switch try plugging it in if it just goes into a blank

also when youve got the switch, pull every blank and try plugging it in

great youve found the ecu and steering wheel wiring so the master cc has to be in the loom, or maybe as i said if theres an extra wiring loom bit that plugs i to the fuse box

please let us know how u get on and sorry i cant help u anymore with the rest of it

Hi Gary, many thanks again for your time and help, it's awkward because you have a different age truck and things don't match up.

Regarding the blue plugs you spotted in the centre console pic, the one by the handbrake is for the sunroof switch, the ones below heated rear screen and air re -circulation are for heated seats. I also found wiring for another cig lighter, and as per my gut feeling all of these spare plugs are in the correct locations for their relevant components( if they're part of your vehicle spec). So this makes me think that if my plug for the CC master switch is there, it should be near to where the master switch should be mounted. Cheers Chris.
