Hi Chaps,

Not sure if anybody come across the problem I've currently got ?

Coming home from work I noticed that the engine started to splutter around 3000rpm on the motorway. Putting my foot down stopped this, but when my foot was taken off the accelerator there was a loud pinking sound from the engine.

This has got worse and now when the engine is around 2000 rpm (when the turbo starts spinning) the engine splutters followed by the same knocking sound when lifting off the gas.

Does this sound as fuel related ? I fitted a new rear fuel filter 3 weeks ago and a new rear fuel pump about 8 months ago... so shouldn't be them...

Any ideas ?

Jamie

Check the intercooler hoses, over-fueling can result in diesel knock. If the hoses are holed the engine gets insufficient air and will also result in black smoke.

Hi there I'm new too, I posted a reply on this topic of my experiences. Mine began the 'knock/pink' thing....... AGAIN!!, just odd one here and there. Regarding Nick's post above the next thing I may try is just put an ordinary air filer back in and take out the long life KandN style thing, maybe thats restricting air too much.......I dont know, I'm probably clutching at straws. Local diesel engine specialist didn't want to know unless there were warning lights on , but there never is even when its so bad that its almost undriveable. From what they were saying it seems without warning lights all they can do is start replacing parts until they replace the one that was causing it!! Which could be pricy. I'm determined to get to the bottom of this because most of the time it runs great, but I don't like smoke belching out the back...

did you get more black smoke out the back if so as already said it could be one of your turbo hoses as the slightest hole can cause this
also to chris 123 never put them k and n type filters on as the egr does not like them.hope this helps somebody out

What fuel do you use. Supermarket brands are best avoided for maximum injector life. I'd put a decent injector cleaner through it and see what happens.
Random black smoke could well be the EGR valve sticking open. Temporarily blank the vac pipe and see if the running issue improves.

Ive fitted silicone hoses and blanked off egr valve with modification. Im sure theres no holes in em and that theyre all fitted correctly. At its worse I had rough idle; popping/backfiring/pinking/knocking black smoke - next day fine; cruised down motorway without issue. Will defineately ditch KandN filter, and will see how it goes. I do appreciate replies/suggestions/help and advice - cheers everyone....

The K&N filter has probably coated the MAF sensor in oil. Take it out and clean it with a good contact cleaner or I used liqui moly MAF cleaner.
Mike
I agree Mike - I've had that problem with a K&N and the MAF - the oil from the new K&N promptly killed a new MAF I'd fitted. D'oh! :(

But I don't think that this is the cause of the problem being described here?
