hi

just wondering what info might be had for the 'ecu' cooling fan ..

[ i've not found any info. via google ..
[ apart from .. only 'used' units available to purchase .. online
[ a circuit diagram would be handy ;-]

could i test its' operation with a multimeter ?
is its' thermostat contained within the fan unit ?
any ideas as to thermostat operating temp. ?

occurred to me recently .. i've not heard it operating for quite a long time ..
even in very-hot-for-uk temps ..
whereas .. it used to be heard on hot summer days after engine shutdown

i've a feeling a 'new' fan might not be available .. separately from the ecu box .. ..
somehow ..

" The E-box is a lidded container that provides a protected environment for the ECM and the EAT ECU.
An open hub, centrifugal fan powered by an electric motor ventilates the E-box with air from the passenger compartment.
Exhaust air from the E-box is directed back into the passenger compartment.
The ventilating and exhaust air is routed between the passenger compartment and the E-box through plastic ducting and corrugated rubber hoses.
Operation of the cooling fan is controlled by a thermostatic switch in the E-box. The thermostatic switch receives a power feed while the ignition switch is in position II. If the temperature in the E-box reaches 35 °C (95 °F) the thermostatic switch closes and connects the power feed to the fan, which runs to cool the E-box with air from the passenger compartment.
When the temperature in the E-box decreases to 27 °C (81 °F), the thermostatic switch opens and stops the fan. To prevent the fan seizing up in colder climates, where it may not operate for long periods of time, the fan also receives a power feed direct from the starter circuit so that it runs each time the engine is cranked.

The engine fan controller is a basic power interface between the EDC and fans motors.
It's housed in the top left of the cooler pack assembly, so fan air is blown over it for cooling.

It take power from the main fuse, a ground from the body and a PWM signal from the EDC.
The fan controller then drives the fan motors at various speeds, based on the PWM signal it receives.
The EDC can request slow, medium, fast and full fan speed, based on the current cooling requirements.


The E box fan is completely different, and not connected in any way to the engine cooling fans.

I've never had the fans cut in on my 04 TD4 due to it running hot, even after changing the stuck open thermostat. Had it just over 4 years done 30 odd thousand miles & the temp gauge has never gone past the 12 o clock. The TD4 eng. runs on the cool side. Only time they work is with the air con.

If you're only concerned about the E box fan, then it's controlled by a simple thermal switch, which is inside the E box, right next to the fan itself. It's a standard brass colour temperature sensor looking device, with a plug on the end with 2 wires, which has a contact closing temperature of 35°C.
Simply unplugging the plug and joining the contacts with a small loop of wire, with turn on the E box fan.

The air is drawn in via one of those rubber tubes, and pushed back out the other tube. Both tube terminate under the shuttle panel, so the fan draws cooler air than is inside the engine bay.

I must admit I never knew that fan existed. Can you hear it running with just the ign. on pos. 2 ? If so I'll keep an ear out.:)

in uk temps .. it rarely switches 'on' .. and i doubt it would be very audible when driving ..
if at all ..

i.e. it sounds different somewhat .. compared to the radiator fans ..
